April 1999 Dr. Teplitz shows you how to manage
your personal energy!
STRESS
AND STROKES
There's another reason to reduce your stress. It can lower
your risk of having a stroke. A study done with women and a separate one with men
whose blood pressure and heart rate jumped significantly when they performed stressful
tasks in a lab had thicker carotid arteries. Thickness reduces the flexibility of
the arteries.
So, you need to reduce your stress. A new way to do that
which is gaining validity is to simply use your nose. Studies are showing taking a
deep whiff of essential oils, such as lavender, orange or cedar, can lower your stress.
And it smells good, too!
ADD HEART DISEASE
AND EVEN DEPRESSION TO STRESS!
When you are under sustained levels of stress (like getting stuck
in traffic jams twice a day), you wind up increasing not only your blood pressure, but you
also cause adrenaline to be secreted.
This can lead to increases in heart disease. The high blood pressure increase the
heart's work-load which weakens it over time. It also can wind up increasing the
risk of stroke, heart attack, kidney failure and congestive heart failure.
Depression can also increase risks to the heart.
What do you want your blood level to be? Optimum levels
would be 120 over 80. You definitely want to keep it under 140 over 90.
EXERCISE AND THE
HEART
One of the ways of preventing heart disease is to get physically
active. One study showed women who were physically active had a 60 to 70% lower risk
of heart disease. Something as simple as a brisk walk is great to do. If you
can't get 30 minutes in at one time, you can even do 10 minutes three times a day.
A SPIRITUAL
PRESCRIPTION
In the December 1998 Prevention Magazine it was reported by Dr.
Dave Larson, National Institute for Healthcare Research, if your physician graduated from
medical school within the last year or two, they might write you a prayer prescription.
Due to all the studies coming out validating the power of prayer,
(some of which I've reported in earlier Teplitz Email Reports) more than 1/3 of the
nation's medical schools now offer courses on spirituality and health. If your
doctor has been out of medical school for some time ask them to check with NIHR in
Rockville, MD for the supporting evidence.
