March 1999 Dr. Teplitz shows you how to manage your
personal energy.
KIDS CAN EXPERIENCE WITHDRAWALS
A study in the "Journal of the American
Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry" found that kids who have been drinking
three cans of caffeinated soda per day experienced caffeine withdrawals. When the
kids went off the sodas cold turkey, their performance dropped dramatically.
So what can you do?
- Limit your child to one soda a day. When you
figure one soda, keep in mind other sources of caffeine the child is having during the
day, like chocolate, iced tea, etc.
- Just like you wean adults off drugs, wean a child off
excessive caffeine gradually.
- You can begin to substitute fruit juices for sodas.
REDUCE BACK PAIN
Tai Chi is a form of exercise that uses very
slow, almost dance-like movements. A study in "Alternative Therapies" had
two groups of 26 people each with back pain. The group which did Tai Chi for six
weeks reported less pain and improved moods as compared to the controls. Tai Chi is
also considered a moving meditation, so you also get the benefits of meditation, too!
Your local Rec Center may have courses you can take.
REDUCING
THE RISK OF ALZHEIMERS
There is probably no disease that is as scary
as Alzheimers. A study done on 5,000 Dutch men and women offers real hope for
avoiding the disease.
It tracked men and women whose average age was 67. Those who ate 4 ounces of fish
(which is one serving a week) had a 70% lower rate of Alzheimers than the non-fish eaters.
The theory as to why these results occurred is because of something called Omega-3
fatty acids which have anti-inflammatory properties.
You can simply eat one serving of fish (cold
water fish are best, e.g. salmon) per week or include Omega-3 supplements in your diet.
NATURAL
WAY TO UNSTUFF YOUR NOSE
So, you've got a sinus infection. Instead
of running to the drug store, run to a super market and buy red or black pepper.
Both red and black pepper dilate blood vessels in the nose and stimulate secretions which
help drain sinuses. You can simply spice up your food or get cayenne pepper capsules
from your local health food store.
