Eating Dark Chocolate To Lower Blood Pressure

 

A study conducted in Germany found that dark chocolate can lower your blood pressure by improving your blood vessels functioning. The researchers found that adults with stage 1 hypertension who consumed the equivalent of 2 dark chocolate kisses daily for 18 weeks lowered their systolic pressure (the top number) by an average of 2.9 mm Hg and diastolic pressure by 1.9 mm Hg. They did this without increasing weight, cholesterol or insulin levels. It seems that it’s the antioxidant polyphenols in the dark chocolate that is making the difference. Also, you need to make sure the dark chocolate you are eating is labeled that it has a 70% or higher level of cacao. So…the expression “take your medicine” definitely takes on a wonderful new meaning!

Another Way To Lower Blood Pressure By Drinking Hibiscus Tea

While dark chocolate gives you a modest drop in systolic pressure, hibiscus tea can give you an even greater drop. Researchers had participants drink eight ounces of hibiscus tea three times a day for six weeks. They found that the participants systolic pressure dropped by an average of 7 points which is the equivalent of the drop one would get from taking standard hypertension drugs. People in the study who had higher blood pressure saw an even greater drop than seven points. Keep in mind this also means no drug side effects! You want to use hibiscus tea that is not part of a tea blend. So…now you can also drink your medicine as well as eat your dark chocolate!

Are Older Workers Less Productive Than Younger Ones?

German economist Axel Borsch-Supan recently completed a study looking at the productivity levels of older workers. He found that was some reduction in productivity when he looked at people doing very unskilled jobs. However, for workers doing knowledge-based jobs, he discovered the opposite effect. Their productivity increased with age until it reached a point where it leveled off. Keep in mind that their productivity levels did not go down, they remained level. So…with unemployment figures so low and employers struggling to find qualified workers in the knowledge field, don’t look at a person’s age when you’re looking to hire. You might just find that you’ve hired a solid gold person!

Relaxation Techniques Reduce Medical Costs

The cost of drugs has become exorbitant, which means you want to stay as healthy as you can.  Researchers have found that 70% of visits to a doctor are because of back pain, insomnia, acid reflux and irritable bowel syndrome. You can now cut these visits and the costs by using relaxation techniques and approaches. In one study, researchers had over 4,400 participants receive eight-weeks of relaxation response training for about three hours a day. They learned meditation, yoga and stress reduction exercises. They also focused on building resiliency with social support, cognitive training skills and positive psychology.

After the training, the researchers found that the participant’s use of medical services dropped 43% compared to their usage the previous year.

In addition, the relaxation response patients reduced their clinical visits by 42%, lab use by 44% and their use of other procedures by 21%. Their emergency rooms visits dropped from 3.7 times per patient to 1.7 times a year even after the program ended.

So…if you want to stay healthier longer, you need to start meditating, taking yoga classes and using stress reduction exercises.
