Using
The Mind To Be Younger In Body
Research
conducted by the Langer Mindfulness Institute took a group of 80-year-olds
and tested them for vision and hearing, grip strength, memory and
dexterity before being taken to a monastery that was decorated to
replicate life in 1959. The decor also included photos of the participants
when they were that age.
Everyone
wore 1950s fashions and entertainment was all 1950s TV shows, movies,
books and music. They were also instructed to discuss sports and events
that did happen during that era, but to talk about them in the present
tense. They were told to think of themselves as actually being younger.
After
five days, the participants did look younger and their scores on
everything including eyesight had improved.
Another
study by the Institute involved two groups of college students hoping to
enter the military. All participants had 20/20 vision or better. One group
was given flight suits to wear and to think of themselves as Air Force
pilots while they used flight simulators. The other group just sat in the
flight simulators and were told that the simulator was broken so they
should just pretend to fly the plane.
Afterwards,
both groups were given vision tests again and the group who viewed
themselves as Air Force pilots and flew the simulator improved their
vision by 40% verse the other group. So…if you want to be younger, get
your mind working for you and think younger, even if it’s not the 1950s.

Treatments
For Lower Back Pain Are A-Changing
There’s
are new first line treatments that Docs are recommending for patients who
have lower-back pain that doesn’t involve taking drugs. The American
College of Physicians has revised their guidelines on treating back pain
to using non drug therapies first. These recommendations include physical
therapy, acupuncture, massage, tai chi, yoga, relaxation techniques,
cognitive-behavioral therapy and spinal manipulation.
So…if
you go to your doc with back pain, make sure you get a script for one of
these alternatives. Your body will be glad you did. Personally, these are
some of the things that I’ll do when my back is acting up. I almost
never take a pill for back pain.

Turning
Anxiety Into Excitement
We’ve
all experienced anxiety at various times in our lives. There’s now
research reported in the Journal
of Experimental Psychology showing that you can change your anxiety to
excitement by simply saying out loud that “I am excited.” People in
the study saying the excited statement changed their feelings of anxiety
to feeling more excited and performing better.
As
an example, people who were preparing to give a persuasive public speech
who said they were excited before giving the speech gave longer speeches.
The excited folk were also more persuasive, competent and relaxed. In this
study also saying “I am calm” got a similar result.
In
another group participants were attempting to solve a math problem said
either “try to get excited” or "try to stay calm.” The excited
folks scored 8% higher solving the problem than the calm or control group.
The
researchers found that when you are anxious, it causes you to focus on the
negative side and has you looking for potential threats. When you focus on
the excited side, it lead to real benefits even if you don’t believe it
at first. Saying I’m excited out loud increases feelings of excitement.
So…if you’re starting to get anxious about something, simply change
your words and watch the impact it has on your performance.

Cranberries
May Hold The Answer For Fighting Super Bugs
Some
strains of E. coli can cause diarrhea and can be transmitted through food,
water or contact with animals and people. With the rise of super bugs,
diarrhea can become deadly. To actually cause an infection, bacteria must
first adhere to a surface in the host such as the stomach lining. The
bacteria multiply and produce enough additional bacteria to be able to
form a biofilm. If you can stop the forming of the biofilm, then there is
no infection.
Enter……
cranberry juice! Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth
found that chemicals in cranberry juice interfere with the adhesion of the
bacteria to form their biofilm by several methods. One is some of the
cranberry juice chemicals compresses tiny tendrils on the surface of the
E. Coli bacteria so that it can’t bind to the lining of the urinary
tract. The second way involves different chemicals in the juice that
greatly reduce the ability of the bacteria to stick to a surface.
So…since we are running out of antibiotics to fight off these superbugs,
it’s good to hear some good news growing in the cranberry bogs.

Another
Benefit Of Yoga That's Just For Men
The
University of Pennsylvania conducted a study that found that men receiving
radiation for prostate cancer who took yoga classes twice a week were less
tired, had fewer sexual and urinary side effects from their treatment when
compared to those who didn’t take yoga classes. In addition, the social
component of the classes even helped boost the men’s general well-being.

Other
