Some
Unusual Reasons You Might Not Be Able To Easily Fall Asleep
You’ve
probably heard news reports about some of the reason we may not be able to
easily fall asleep, such as watching your electronics devices less than an
hour before bed to having alcohol or caffeinated coffee too close to bed
time.
There
are several other things you may be doing that you are not aware of that
are causing you to have a restless night’s sleep.
Eating
a lot of fast food – the journal Sleep Health reported that adults who
drank a lot of soda were more likely to sleep five hours or less at night.
In addition having burger and fries also reduces your ability to sleep.
Certain
drugs you’re taking can also interfere with your sleep. These are
Beta-Blockers,
SSRI antidepressant drugs and asthma medications.
So…if
one of these apply, you’ll need to adjust your diet and your medications
to have a restful lights sleep.

A
New Way To Look At How The Brain And Our Immune System Interact
While
the blood vessels of the body carry blood throughout your body, there is
another system that carries immune cells throughout your body and into the
brain. It’s the lymphatic system and it used to be thought that the
lymphatic vessels stopped before they reached your brain. Scientists from
the University of Virginia have now discovered that we have lymphatic
vessels in our brain. This discovery could affect the treatments for
neurological diseases, such as, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis,
autism and many other diseases that affect the brain.

Paying
It Forward Can Be Powerful In These Strange Times
You may have seen the movie Pay It Forward a number of years ago. Well,
Time magazine had a blurb in the latest issue about a woman who started
paying it forward at a McDonalds. She noticed a van behind her on the
drive thru line where a man had a bunch of kids in the car. She decided to
tell the cashier that she would pay their bill. When the man got to the
cashier he decided to pay the next car’s bill. The McDonald’s staff
reported that this went on for hours and that a total of 167 people paid
it forward. Yes!!!

Just
Spoke To The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta
I thought you’d like to know that I just had the opportunity to present
3 sessions at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. The VP of Supervision
and Regulations, Steve Wise, had heard me speak at a Alabama State Banking
Department Conference and recommended me to his conference planners. The

There
Are Benefits To Being A Weekend Warrior
The
thinking used to be that being a weekend warrior, which means doing a lot
of exercise only on weekends, could be dangerous to your health as you
risked injury and maybe even
death from overdoing it on the weekend. In addition, you were unlikely to
get much fitness benefit from being inactive for the other 5 days of the
week.
Well,
it turns out there’s a lot more benefit in being a weekend warrior than
has been thought. This information came from a study reported by the
British where they found that when the researchers compared the weekend
warriors to inactive adults, the warriors had a lower risk of death from
all causes, including cardiovascular disease and cancer. So…while only
exercising on weekend doesn’t give you as much benefit as a more regular
exercise program, it’s much better than doing nothing at all.

Changing
Farming Practices Produce Higher Yields, Have Less Erosion And Save $$$
An article in the Union of Concerned
Scientists publication reported on a way to reduce soil erosion by 88%
and save taxpayers between $241 million and $505 million annually in
cleanup costs from run off from farms while reducing global warming
emissions. How do you do that?
It turns out it’s simple. All farmers need to do is switch from a 2 crop
rotation system between corn and soy to a three or four crop rotation
system, as well as, practicing no till farming. This system would add oats
and a cover crop of red clover both of which act as a “green” manure.
The researchers found that this increased crop yields so that the corn
yield was 2 to 4% higher and soybean yields were 10 to 17 % higher than
the 2 crop system. So…a simple change can have a profound and profitable
experience for our environment and farmers.

The
Mediterranean Diet of having fresh produce, lean protein, and healthy fats
has been shown to increase a person’s longevity. There are now several
other benefits that have been reported by eating this way that showed up
in people on this diet who were in their early 70s. These people had
almost half as many bone fractures as those who did not eat this way and
they had less brain atrophy over a 3-year period. Eating The Mediterranean
Diet way has also been shown to protect people from diabetes, heart
disease and it may even protect against cancer. So…if this is what it
does for people in their early 70s, imagine if you are younger how
beneficial it would be for you.
