The
Powerful Anti-inflammatory Astaxanthin’s Benefits List Keeps Getting

Astaxanthin
comes from a microalgae which produces it to protect itself from
ultraviolet light. While it’s important as an anti-inflammatory to
protect again joint problems such as rheumatoid arthritis and tennis
elbow, it’s benefits have expanded dramatically. Astaxanthin has now
been found to help prevent and treat cancer, metabolic syndrome, diabetes,
diabetic nephropathy, gastrointestinal diseases and liver disease. It will
even pass through the blood-brain and the blood-retinal barrier (which
relates to the eyes).
Even
this list of the benefits from taking astaxanthin doesn’t include all
the things it’s capable of. I use it to also prevent sun burn while
still allowing Vitamin D to be produced through my skin. If you are an
athlete, you can take additional astaxanthin to improve your athletic
performance, too! So…you can start by taking 4 mg per day and build up
to 8 mg per day.

The
Problem With Doctor Rating Sites
Because
of the internet, we can now rate our doctors and read the online reviews
before selecting a doctor, a surgeon or a specialist. Great idea, right?
Well, maybe not as great as it sounds. A study done by New York’s
Hospital for Special Surgery compared the ratings of 275 randomly
selected sports-medicine doctors on three popular review sites. The
researchers found little consistency. On one site a doctor could have
five stars and on another have only two stars. So, which site has the
true rating. And that’s the problem, you don’t know.
In
addition, there are companies that now specialize in boosting a
doctor’s online ratings. One company even claimed that it increased
the comments about doctors by 900% and increased their star ratings by
24% in just six months. So, does this mean the doc really got so much
better in those six months or that they were effective in gaming the
system? Maybe not.
So,
what should you do? When you look at ratings, review several rating
systems, such as, Health grades, RateMDs, Amini, Yelp and Angie’s List
to see if there is a consistency in the ratings as well as the overall
satisfaction with the doc you are researching. You can also email your
friends to find out if they have had an experience with the doctor
you’re considering using.

High
Blood Pressure Medication Having Adverse Reactions
Researchers
at UT Southwestern Medical Center as reported in the Journal of the
American Geriatrics Society found that two-thirds of adults over 65 have
high blood pressure (hypertension) and the initial medication recommended
for them is thiazide diuretics. This med is designed to eliminate sodium
and water from the system to decrease blood pressure.
The
researchers examined 1,060 adult veterans with hypertension who recently
began taking thiazide diuretic and compared them to a control group.
During a 9-month period, 14% of those taking thiazide developed a
metabolic adverse event verses 6% of the controls. A metabolic event
includes low sodium or potassium levels in the blood and a 25% decrease in
kidney function. The researchers also found that only 42% of those on the
drug were being monitored for these adverse events. So…once again
medications may not be the best route to go to handle health
problems. Read

So

Another
Heart Health Option – A Dog
Petting a dog for a short period of time can have a measurable positive
effect on heart patients’ cardiac function and stress levels. How about
as short a time as 12 minutes. That’s right 12 minutes. This was from a
study reported at a conference of the American Heart Association.
The
researchers had 76 patients with heart failure assigned to a 12-minute
visit from a dog, a human or both. The control had no visit. The dogs were
specially trained and placed on the patient’s bed, so they could pet the
dog. The researchers found a 5% drop in systolic pulmonary artery pressure
during the dog only visit and a 5% drop after the visit. In addition, a
stress hormone dropped 17%. Finally, the dog visitor had 24% less anxiety.
So…bring on the dogs for patients with heart failure!
