Benefits From Yoga
I’ve
been practicing yoga daily for over 46 years. It’s been key in helping
me to maintain flexibility as I’ve aged. Because of Yoga, I feel like
I’m as capable today of moving as I was in my 40’s. A colleague of
mine, Jen Miller, has put together a list of 18 benefits from doing yoga
and she’s tied the benefits into the science behind it. Here are some of
the areas she includes:
-
Relieving
stress and anxiety
-
Improving
cardiovascular health
-
Strengthening
brain activity
-
Lowering
the risk of cancer
-
Strengthening
bones
And
much more!

Importance
Of Exercise for People With MS
Exercising
used to be discouraged for people with multiple sclerosis for fear of
exacerbating their symptoms. Today’s research is turning this
recommendation around by finding that strength training can help improve
MS symptoms like fatigue, depression and mobility. A Danish study found
that MS patients who did resistance training twice a week for 6 months
showed less brain atrophy on MRI’s as compared to those who didn’t
exercise. It also seemed to slow progression of the disease and prevent
symptoms from worsening. So…the notion of tote that barge and lift that
bale may help an MS person.

Using
Light To Kill Super Bugs And Cancer
A study published in Photomedicine
and Laser Surgery found that blue light can obliterate infections,
including the antibiotic resistant form of bacteria Staphylococcus
aureus. The researchers found that a single dose of blue light killed
up to 92% of the two most common strains of MRSA. It appears that the blue
light weakens molecules in the body that are causing the infection.
Blue
light may also be used to fight cancer as one of the effects of the light
is to enhance the effects of medication. The therapy is called
photodynamic therapy (PDT) and it involves giving a cancer patient a drug
that settles in the cancer cell’s mitochondria where the drug is
converted into a huge molecule. When the cell is exposed to the blue
light, it is annihilated.
Part
of the beauty of PDT is that it is harmless to healthy tissue and that the
treatment only takes 15 to 20 minutes under a lamp. Finally, the light
eliminates precancerous skin lesions at a rate of 70 to 80% and stalls the
progression of lesions that doctors can’t even see yet. So…shine on,
shine on, blue light.

Aggression
In Dogs May Be Related To Chemicals In Their Bodies
We’ve
all seen aggressive dogs. It may be that their aggressiveness is related
to the amounts of two hormones in their bodies – oxytocin and
vasopressin. Oxytocin is known as the love hormone and vasopressin is
related to aggression. In dogs trained to assist people, the dogs have
high levels of oxytocin. These dogs have been selectively bred to have
non-aggressive temperaments. Aggressive dogs have high levels of
vasopressin. Separately, people with high levels of vasopressin have
chronic aggression problems.
This
information may lead to ways to turn aggressive dogs (and people) into
less or non-aggressive ones.

McDonald’s
Is Starting To Grow Cattle The Right Way
McDonald’s
is starting to grow its beef using a sustainable agricultural practice
that sequesters carbon in the soil. Regenerative agriculture is a system
that uses cover crops, no-till and herbivore grazing (mostly cattle to us
city folks). This method improves soil health and fertility.
McDonald’s
has started a pilot program that involves 150 operators in its Canadian
beef supply chain. This approach involves moving cattle around grazing
land for short durations in small fenced-off areas called paddocks. The
paddocks are then given long periods of time to rest which allows for
accelerated grass regrowth along with the growth of other flora and fauna.
This approach mimics the migrations of wild herd animals like buffalo.
So…if
this pilot program succeeds, McDonald’s has the power to change with way
beef cattle are raised around the world.

What
Happens In Your Brain When You Sleep?
One
of the purposes of sleep is to detoxify the body from wastes that have
built up in the brain during the day. It’s called the glymphatic system
after the glial cells that manage the system. The brain contains more
glial cells than neurons (60.84 billion glial cells vs 16.34 billion
neurons in the cerebral cortex). During sleep the glymphatic system
becomes 10 times more active than when we are awake. Within the toxins the
system gets rid of are the proteins linked to Alzheimer’s disease.
Your
brain cells shrink by about 60% during sleep which allows for more
efficient waste removal. Recent research using MRI scans and computer
modeling found that animals who slept on their side increased the
effectiveness of their glymphatic system.
Finally,
lack of sleep in those over 60 causes the brain to shrink more rapidly
compared to those who sleep well. So…roll over and sleep on your side to
help your body detox.
