The NFL May Be Changing The Way We Look At Food
Over
the past several years there have been a lot of news stories about
athletes using steroids. There are now natural alternatives to using
illegal steroids that these athletes can use to bulk up to get bigger,
stronger and faster? Surprisingly, it turns out that the simple solution
is to change the players eating habits and their nutrition.
The
concept has become so refined that depending on the position they play,
their diet may vary dramatically. For example, linemen might be placed be
on diet of no carbs and only greens for three weeks. The result for them
would be an increase in muscle and a loss of body fat. One football team,
the Philadelphia Eagles, as one part of the approach have implemented a
healthy diets regime by banning pizza, burgers, fried chicken and
unhealthy treats. While this is not an easy approach, the benefits are
proving very powerful.
Just
think, if this nutrition concept spreads to college and high school teams
and then to other sports, there will be a tremendous amount of validation
for children, teens and young adults, even those not involved in to sports
to eat healthier.

GMO Crops Are More Dangerous Than You Might Have
Thought
Monsanto,
DuPont and the other producers of GMO crops have spent millions of
dollars in an attempt to prove that GMO crops have no negative impacts
and to keep states from labeling foods. Well, an article just published
in the most prestigious medical journal in America, the New
England Journal of Medicine, called on lawmakers to label
genetically modified foods.
The
authors pointed out that GMO crops make plants resistant to herbicides
and pesticides which have tremendously increased the amount of toxic
chemicals dumped on crops since 1974 by a factor of more than 250. Plus
these chemicals wind up in the environment.
They
also pointed out that these are very nasty chemicals. One of the
chemicals used to be called Agent Orange and was used during the Vietnam
War to destroy all trees and bushes in the jungle to make it harder for
the enemy to hide. The World Health Organization has labeled this
chemical as a possible human carcinogen. They labeled another chemical
as a probable human carcinogen. These chemicals have been linked to both
malignant tumors at multiple sites on animals and with an increase of
non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in humans.
The
authors concluded that “The time has therefore come to thoroughly
reconsider all aspects of the safety of plant biotechnology…We believe
the time has come to revisit the United States’ reluctance to label GM
foods.” So…having the Journal
say it’s time for labeling hopefully eliminates the arguments against
labeling GMO foods.

Eating Nonfat
Dairy May Be A Mistake For Losing Weight
We’ve
been trained to eat nonfat yogurt and fat-free milk in order to lose
weight. It turns out that this may be the exact wrong advice. Two recent
studies showed that whole-fat dairy might be more helpful for weight
reduction. In one study, people who regularly ate whole-fat foods ate
fewer carbs than those who ate low and non-fat dairy. In the second study,
the researchers found that those who ate a full-fat diet reduced their
risk for type 2 diabetes by 23%. The low and nonfat people had no
reduction in their risk for diabetes. So…start picking whole fat
products and enjoying their yummy tastes.

Probiotics: Another Way to Lose Weight
Researchers
recently reported in the British
Journal of Nutrition that overweight women who took a probiotic
supplement containing lactobacillus rhamnosus lost twice as much weight
and had an easier time of keeping it off compared to women who took a
placebo.
Another
study involving twins found that those who were lean had a much greater
diversity of gut bacteria than their overweight siblings. A third study
found that when bacteria from overweight humans were introduced into the
intestines of normal weight mice, the mice became fat. When bacteria from
lean humans were introduced into mice, the mice stayed lean.
So…eating
yogurt with live bacteria, while making sure it is low in sugar, eating
fermented foods or taking a probiotic supplement may really help you keep
that weight off.

Which Is Better - Typing On A Computer Or Writing In A
Notebook
Today,
more and more students are using a computer to take notes. Is this the
best strategy for learning or should students be writing their notes by
hand? A number of studies are helping to sort this out. According to a
study at Indiana University, the researchers found that while typing had
the advantage of speed, handwriting activated more brain areas, which
included thinking, language and working memory in children who learned new
letters and numbers.
A study at the University of Washington, with grade school children,
showed that those who wrote essays longhand used more words and expressed
more ideas compared to those using a keyboard.
The
third study analyzed note taking among college students at Princeton and
UCLA. The study compared students who took handwritten notes in class
verse those who typed. While the typist took more notes they seemed to
record the lecture verbatim instead of paraphrasing and summarizing which
is what the writers had to do. On tests of retention of facts, as well as,
understanding the ideas of the lecture those who wrote their notes did
significantly better. So…keep those pens full of ink and write away.

Options For Treating and Healing Congestive Heart
Failure
While
the medical profession views Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) as an
incurable condition, recently there were two studies published on
treatments for CHF. One was looking at the drug Entresto
and its impact on CHF. The researchers found a 20% improvement in
patient’s outcomes with the drug.
The
second study looked at clinical trials using the supplement CoQ10 which is
necessary for mitochondria to produce energy for the heart and for overall
body functioning. The patients in this study had moderate to severe CHF
and they took 100 mg of CoQ10 or a placebo three times a day in addition
to standard medications. After two years, the CoQ10 group had an amazing
44% improvement in patient outcomes.
Dr.
Julian Whitaker is able to produce powerful results for people with CHF.
Besides C0Q10, he uses a number of other nutrients to aid in improving and
in some cases eliminating CHF in his patients. Besides his using CoQ10 in
the form of ubiquinol, his recommendations for supplements include:
magnesium – 1000mg, D-ribose – 10 g, L-carnitine – 2000 to 4000 mg,
taurine – 2000 mg and Vitamin D3 – 5000 IU.
Whitaker
also uses hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and enhanced external counter
pulsation (EECP). What HBOT does is flood the cells with oxygen and EECP
squeezes blood up from the extremities and boosts nitric oxide levels
which enhance arterial health.
So…if
you want to prevent CHF start taking 100 mg of CoQ10 per day and if you
are diagnosed with CHF there are now many options to keep you healthier.

Using
Your Diet To Cut Your Alzheimer’s Risk In Half
There’s
a new diet plan that combines the best aspects of two different diets that
are good for cardiovascular health. The diet is called MIND and
combines the DASH diet, and the Mediterranean diet, both of which affect
cardiovascular health. The MIND diet goes further than these diets by
reducing the likelihood of Alzheimer’s disease by 53%.
A
study reported in the Alzheimer’s
& Dementia found that the MIND diet, which was developed by
researchers at Rush University, even worked for people who only followed
the diet moderately well had a 35% reduction in the risk of Alzheimer’s.
So
what are some of the things you eat on the MIND diet?
- One
serving a day of leafy greens
- Eating
nuts 5 times a week
- Eating
berries – particularly blueberries
- Eating
fish and poultry one time a week
- One
glass of wine a day
What
do you need to reduce in your diet?
- Red
meat – you can have up to 3 servings a week
- Cheese
– have less than one serving a week
- Butter
and margarine – less than one tablespoon daily
- Pastries
and sweets – five servings or less per week
- Fast
foods and fried foods – less than one serving a week
So…mind
your mind with The MIND diet.
