TAPPING
THE WISDOM OF A NATUROPATHIC DOCTOR
This Week's Expert:
Kat Wright
Join
me and my guest this week, Kat Wright. Kat is a
Naturopathic Doctor. Getting her degree was just the
culmination of her having been studying health and
nutrition for 20 years. During that time she raised 5
children on less than a $100 a year being spent on
medical expenses for the entire family – an amazing
feat! Join me as we tap into Kat’s wisdom to look at
the things you should be doing and the ones to avoid to
have a healthier life. Kat Wright has recently published
the book Your Health is in Your Hands: Living and Aging
Well. Her website is www.KatWrightND.com.

Twenty
Year Study Validates The Impact Of Vitamins, Minerals & Herbs
A
study published in the Nutrition
Journal was
conducted by researchers from the University of California at Berkeley
on the effectiveness of vitamins, minerals and herbs. The researchers
followed the health of 278 people for 20 years who took a variety of
supplements and compared them to a control group who took no supplements
at all.
Compared
to the control group the supplement takers were 73% more likely to have
healthy blood sugar levels and 39% more likely to have healthy blood
pressure levels. On their overall heart health, they had much lower levels
of homocysteine, C-reactive protein and triglycerides. They even had
higher levels of HDL cholesterol, which is the good kind. So…if you’re
looking to stay healthier, maintain your youth and stay disease free,
consider adding vitamins, mineral and herbs to your daily activities. If
you look at past issues of the Teplitz Reports in the archives section,
you’ll find lots of blurbs on which vitamins and minerals I recommend.

Natural
Remedies For Mosquitoes
It’s
Mosquito time again and many people are getting out their DEET sprays. If
you want to stay away from using these chemicals on yourself and your
kids, you have a number of natural options you can experiment with.
While
my personal favorite is taking 100 mg of Vitamin B1 every 6 to 8 hour when
you are going to outside, here are a number of other options:
1. Apply cinnamon leaf oil – one study found it even more effective than
DEET.
2. Use a clear vanilla extract mixed with olive oil.
3. Wash with citronella soap and then put 100% pure citronella essential
oil on your skin. Java Citronella is considered the highest quality brand
available.
4. Catnip oil – one study found it 10 times more effective than DEET.
So…before
you reach for the chemical bug spray, reach for some of these options
first. You body will be glad you did!

The
Glycemic Index May Not Be Helpful To Follow
The Glycemic Index (GI), developed
a number of years ago, was designed to rate how much a food raises your
blood sugar level. Earlier studies raised some questions about the rating,
for example, there were
questions when M&M’s were rated as having a lower impact on your
blood sugar when compared to a potato. Basically, these researchers found
that the GI is only helpful for diabetics.
A recent study reported in JAMA looked in depth at the GI and found that it did nothing for a
person’s insulin sensitivity, cholesterol or blood pressure. The
researchers found that what helped keep your blood sugar low was a 5-week
low carb diet.

The
Power Of Your Relationship With Your Dog
Oxytocin
is a hormone in our brain that increases when we cuddle or are in love. A
Japanese study conducted a few years ago which was published in the
journal Hormones
and Behavior looked at our relationship with our dogs and found how it
increased our levels of oxytocin. The study was conducted with 55 dogs and
their owners. The owners whose dogs gazed at them for two minutes or
longer showed higher levels of oxytocin than the owners of dogs that gazed
at them for less time. Also, about 23% of the group that had the longer
gazing dogs reported being happier than the group where the dog gazed at
them for around a minute
In
another study from South Africa, dog owners sat on a rug and for 30
minutes focusing all their attention on their dog. The owners talked
softly to their dogs while rubbing and scratching them. The
owner’s blood was drawn at the beginning and at the end of the 30
minutes. Next, the owners sat in the room with the dog present and just
read a book for 30 minutes.
The
researchers found that during the 30 minutes of focused attention with
their dogs the owner’s blood pressure decreased and their levels of
oxytocin increased. Other hormones that relate to pain relief and
euphoria, bonding between children and parents, and feelings of pleasure
also increased. Interestingly, all these same hormones increased in the
dog as well. So…take a half an hour and really be with your dog so that
you both received the benefits!

Hugging
Stops The Cold Virus
As reported in Psychological
Science, a study conducted by researchers at Carnegie Mellon
University exposed a group of willing participants to a common cold virus.
They then compared those who received daily hugs with those who were
seldom hugged. The researchers found that those who were hugged on a daily
basis were far less likely to develop cold symptoms. It turns out the
virus couldn’t get the huggers sick since hugging lowered the
stress levels in their bodies. So…maybe we need to change the adage of
an apple a day to lots of hugs a day!

Vitamin
E Slows Up Alzheimer’s Disease
A
study published in JAMA
compared Vitamin E to the Alzheimer’s drug memantine
to mild to moderate levels of the disease. While memantine
is supposed to be only used for moderate to severe Alzheimer’s, it is
prescribed off label by docs for mild cases. The researchers conducted a
placebo controlled double blind study where patients received 2,000 mg of
Vitamin E, or 20 mg of memantine,
or both E and memantine
or a placebo.
The
researchers found that over a two year period, the clinical progression of
Alzheimer’s in the Vitamin E patients slowed by 19% when compared to the
placebo group. This translated to about a 6 month delay of the disease
over the two year period. They also found that the time caregivers had to
spend with the patient increased the least of any of the groups. Finally, memantine
had no improvement the patients in this mild to moderate group.

If
You Are Taking Prescription Drugs, What Time You Take It Is Important
While
I attempt to keep my medications to a minimum (I’m only taking a thyroid
med), I know many people are taking lots of prescription drugs for lots of
different problems so I want to make you aware of an area that your Doctor
and pharmacist may not be aware of called Drug
Chronotherapy. This means that the time you take a drug can have a
major impact on its effectiveness.
There is a master clock in our bodies that keeps us in sync with the
Earth’s cycles of light and dark. There are then sub clocks that
regulate other functions in our body. Taking a medication at the wrong
time might reduce its effectiveness and increase the side effects. As an
example, when should you take a once a day pill? The researchers found
that they often work better by taking them at night. One example is the
colorectal cancer drug 5-FU which works best when given at night when
cancer cells are more vulnerable and normal cells are resting and the
least sensitive.
Let’s
take a look at some health problems and when to take the drug:
1. High Blood Pressure – Take at least one med at bedtime.
2. Heartburn – Take them 30 minutes before a meal
3. Asthma – Take mid-afternoon if it’s an oral med and late
afternoon if it’s an inhaled steroid.
4. Rheumatoid arthritis – Take in the evening or at night.
So…another
old adage “Timing is everything” turns out to be crucial for when to
take your meds.

Possibilities December 2013)
