Volume 2 #1 January  2003

Dr. Teplitz - the "Energy Doctor"!

Here is the latest issue of the Teplitz Email Report. Enjoy it.

WOMEN NEED EXERCISE FOR HEART DISEASE

In Prevention Magazine, Dr. Nieca Goldberg, spokesperson for the American Heart Association, reported that doctors aren't referring women patients with heart disease to exercise and lifestyle programs. There appears to be gender bias in not referring women.

So, if you are a woman and have heart disease or know someone who does, make sure to talk with your doctor about the need to be in a cardiac rehabilitation program.

ANOTHER FLU REMEDY THAT'S GOOD FOR FIGHTING CANCER AND HEART DISEASE, TOO!

There's a traditional African flu remedy that reduces the flu's impact. It's called Jamaican sorrel and is meant to be brewed as a tea. In studies with rats, it's also been shown to stop skin cancer, as well as, preventing healthy cells from becoming cancerous in the first place. Finally, it's even been found to lower blood pressure.

Tea, anyone? Just make sure it's Jamaican sorrel. You can call Vital Botanicals at 800 609-4326 to order some.

SEVEN WAYS TO PREVENT AND STOP ARTHRITIS PAIN

There's now a whole arsenal of natural remedies that you can use to stop and prevent arthritis pain.
1. Ginger - A study reported by Odense University in Denmark found a 75% reduction in both pain and swelling by arthritis sufferers who took ginger. You can buy ginger root and cook with it or make a tea of it. You can also buy ginger supplements.
2. Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate - Taking this as a supplement can result in a 73% reduction of arthritis pain. It can even strengthen the cartilage in bones. Take two 500 mg tablets twice a day.
3. Zinc - A study published in The Lancet found that zinc supplements reduced inflammation.
4. Fish Oil - The Omega 3 fatty acids in fish is what does the trick. It's a powerful anti-inflammatory and reduces joint tenderness. Either eat more cold water fish like tuna and salmon or take a 300 mg supplement with each meal.
5. DMSO - This is a topical ointment that has had 3,000 studies validating its effectiveness. It offers quick, lasting pain relief. Emory University found it more effective than morphine. Just rub it in for pain relief.
6. MSM - It contains a sulfur-based compound that is necessary for repairing damaged tissue.
7. And Finally, MOVE THAT BODY. The New England Journal of Medicine reported that nursing home residents whose average age was 87 did a 10-week exercise program for their knees and hips. Their muscle strength more than doubled. Their walking speed increased by 12% and their stair climbing ability increased by 28%.

FIBROMYALGIA MAY BE A VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY

In Dr. Julian Whitaker's newsletter, he wrote that Dr. Michael Holick reported that 40% to 60% of all fibromyalgia cases are misdiagnosed and may actually be a Vitamin D deficiency. What the person may have instead is the equivalent of adult rickets, which is a Vitamin D deficiency.

The symptoms of both fibromyalgia and Vitamin D deficiencies are very similar. There's an easy way to find out which it really is. Ask you doctor to order a blood test for 25(OH)D. If your levels are low you might want to talk to your doctor about taking very high doses of Vitamin D in the range of 2,000 to 4,000 IUs of Vitamin D per day. (To reach a toxic level of Vitamin D, you'd have to be taking 50,000 IUs per day.)

TO SALT OR NOT TO SALT? THAT'S REALLY A QUESTION

Way back in prehistoric times our ancestors consumed 604 mg of sodium per day. Today, we Americans consume 3,400 mg per day. As you can tell these numbers are way out of alignment.  Now if you can cut your salt consumption down to 2,400 mg a day, you'll help keep yourself from having high blood pressure and reduce the risk of getting cataracts. If you can cut back to 1,500 mg a day, you may be able to cut back on, or even stop taking blood pressure medication.

Even people with healthy blood pressure need to cut back because a recent study published in Hypertension found that 25% of the people with healthy blood pressure are sodium sensitive and run the same risk of death as those with high blood pressure.

The key to cutting back on salt is going to come from reading labels since 75% of the salt in your diet comes from processed foods. Attempt to eat foods with less than 200 mg of sodium per serving and avoid any foods with more than 800 mg per serving.

HERE'S A SURPRISE FOOD THAT REDUCES CHOLESTEROL

It's avocado! The Journal of the American Dietetic Association reported that avocados have a chemical called beta-sitosterol that reduces the amount of cholesterol absorbed in food. And avocados have more beta-sitosterol than any other fruit. The fat in avocado (30 grams) is even the good heart healthy kind - monounsaturated fats!

READER"S COMMENTS

Here's what one reader wrote to me:

I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate receiving your reports. I am so tickled to receive the study on the effects of nature. I have known this to be true as I see it so prevalently in myself. I was struggling last year with winter. I WENT TO LAKE ERIE. Back to nature...and I had no problem then. There is such beauty in the new fallen snow and the ice.
