Coming Thru The Hurricane With Flying Colors

I live in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and as you may know Hurricane Isabel came right at us. I went up to Richmond Virginia to wait it out. Richmond also got hit by Isabel. It turned out I was staying in a house in Richmond that was one of only 30,000 to not lose electricity during the storm. The houses across the street and behind us all lost their power.

After Isabel passed through on Thursday, I called my next door neighbor on Friday morning and she said I had no damage to my house. We just were without power. At 10 pm she called me back and told me our power was back on. I felt blessed at my good fortune.

Depression May Really Be In Your Brain

Recently Discover Magazine reported that depression may be located in the right side of your brain in an area called the right pre-frontal cortex. The left pre-frontal cortex is where positive feelings and emotions are located. Research now suggests that cause of depression may be from an underpowered left cortex and an outpouring of negative feelings from the right side. With the positive side not working up to speed, the person is flooded with fear that leads to helplessness and despair.

University of Wisconsin researchers are using magnetic stimulation to stimulate the neurons in the left cortex. They are finding as many as half their patients are experiencing significant relief from depression. And these were people who had all failed to improve using previous therapies.

Another technique being pioneered at Northwestern University is the use of neurofeedback. This approach uses alpha brainwaves to increase the alpha waves on the right cortex and decrease them on the left. Of 20 patient who underwent treatment, all reported feeling better.

So...another option I'd recommend is to consider meditation which changes alpha brainwave activity. Also you might want to check out Brain Gym(r) movement exercises that affect the brain's wiring system. You can find out more information about Brain Gym at www.braingym.org.

Treadmill Tests for Heart Function Missing A Key Piece

The New England Journal of Medicine reported that Doctors evaluating treadmill examinations for heart function are missing a key element in determining how effective the heart is working. That element is looking at the way the heart is beating during the recovery period after the work-out. The Journal reported that looking at the irregular heart beats during recovery is a better indicator of the risk of death over the next five years.

So...if you're going to be having a stress test on a treadmill, make sure the Doctor records and analyses what happens during the recovery period.

Study Analyses Chiropractic Care Versus Regular Medical Care

And the winner is...combining both Chiropractic treatments and regular medical care. A report in the American Chiropractic Journal analyzed Medicare's data and discovered that patients receiving both forms of care had medical costs that were 50% less than patients who received only medical care.

So...if you go to your doctor don't forget to also go to your chiropractor, too!

Keep Your Heart Beating Regularly The Fishy Way

A University of Washington study of 179 people with heart disease found that those with higher blood levels of omega-3s had far fewer fatal heart attacks and sudden cardiac deaths. It seems that omega-3 fatty acids may prevent fatal irregular heartbeats by improving the flow of electrical signals that keep the heart beating steady.

You can get your omega-3s by having two servings a week of fatty fish such as salmon or mackerel weekly.

Writing Can Help Cancer Patients Sleep Better

A report in Health Psychology found that people with advanced kidney cancer who wrote their thoughts and feelings about their personal experience with the cancer slept better and longer than people who just wrote about impersonal subjects like diet, exercise and sleep. The ones who felt better wrote for just 20 minutes a day. They even felt more enthusiastic about tackling daily activities.

My thoughts would be to write about any illness you have and see if you sleep better and longer, too. Again, the key seems be to writing about your personal experiences with your illness.

She Loves The Full Spectrum Fluorescent Lighting

Here is what Carol Shaheen, with Tomie Raines Realty in Grand Rapids Michigan has to say about the lights. "I am so excited about the full spectrum lights I ordered from you.  Literally, from the minute I walked into my office after the lights were installed, I could physically feel the difference. It felt as if my body was recalibrating. I responded to this 'light' environment with a dramatic increase in energy. I work long hours, and noticed that I was leaving feeling as fresh as when I walked in each morning.
One night, I looked at the clock and discovered it was 11:00! It felt more like 7:00. The lighting difference was so noticeable that others thought I had a skylight installed in my office, which is located in the interior of our building.

After three months of exposure to the full spectrum lighting, I can say that my energy level is consistently dramatically higher. I am thrilled with the results and would love to see others experience the benefits of this wonderful product."

I Learned A Lesson When Checking Airline Baggage

Just the other day I flew on American Airlines to Orlando where I was going to switch to a Southwest Airlines flight. I booked both flights separately on the internet. No problem.

When I checked in for the American flight I asked them to check my luggage on both the American and Southwest flights. It was then that I discovered that American and Southwest don't have an agreement to transfer bags between them. That meant I had to get my bags from American and lug them over to Southwest and check in again and go through security again. Had my American flight been late, I would have missed my connecting flight.

Had I booked through a travel agent, I would have known this and probably would have not routed myself this way. So be careful if you're doing some unique bookings on the internet

Stop Middle-Age Spread

Middle-age spread now has a medical name. It's called somatopause and it impacts 80 million baby boomers in the US. The spread is directly related to the decline of growth hormone produced by the body during aging.

Biomedical researchers have discovered that short-burst, sprinting type of exercises will increase the body's natural production of growth hormone. This type of exercise is highly productive, but to perform it safely you'll need to gradually build your time and intensity.

So...gotta run.

That's it for this month.
