Alleviating
Depression And Anxiety Through Your Gut
Research
A study from Griffith University in Australian reported in Prevention
Magazine analyzed the effects of taking probiotic supplements on
participant’s levels of depression and anxiety. The researchers found
that taking the supplement reduced the participant’s symptoms. This
could be due to the level of communication between the brain and your
digestive system. They also found that healthy people taking the
supplement were better able to manage stressful situations. I would
recommend taking a supplement that is in the 25 to 50 billion range and
has a variety of bacteria strains in it. You can also add probiotic-rich
foods to your diet which includes pickles, sauerkraut, yogurt, kefir and
aged cheeses like cheddar and Gouda. So…take your supplement or eat up
to reduce your anxiety, depression or stress.

Hope For Parkinson’s Sufferers
A
recent study analyzed the effects of N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), a
nutritional supplement, on 2 groups of people with Parkinson’s disease.
One group was the control group which just continued on their regular
medications. The second group added to this 600 mg of oral NAC twice a day
as well as a weekly intravenous infusion of 50 mg/kg of NAC. They did this
for three months. The researchers found that the NAC group had marked
improvements in both mental and physical function. In addition, the NAC
protected dopamine transporters in the brain, which researchers postulate
can slow neurodegeneration and the progression of symptoms. Dr. Julian
Whitaker recommends adding 1,200 mg of NAC daily in divided doses. Since
the study participants had their improvements occur within 3 months,
Parkinson’s sufferers should notice changes pretty quickly to see if NAC
is helping them.

Listing
GMOs In Foods, So You Know What You’re Buying
About
a year ago, a Vermont law requiring GMOs to be listed on food packages was
stopped from going into effect. Congress passed a law overriding this
requirement. Instead of having a GMO’s clearly listed on the food
package, a QR code would be on the label and by scanning it you
would be taken to a website. The US Department of Agriculture just
released the study on this and they found that having this GMO information
only online is a totally inadequate way to give consumers the information
that they want on GMOs.
Some
of their findings included:
1.
Low income earners, rural residents and those over 65 might not
have the technical ability or be unfamiliar with how to access QR
Codes.
2.
The QR Code apps on the market are not intuitive and
also have pop-up ads which could confuse consumers
3. Consumers without phones cannot access the information
4. Internet speeds could be too slow to easily download the information
The
report concluded that “offline alternatives are necessary for consumers
who lack access to a scanning device or broadband.” So…my
interpretation is that the Vermont law of listing the GMOs on the package
was the simplest and easiest way to give consumers real choice in choosing
whether or not to buy GMO products. Hopefully, this will be the
recommendation of the USDA especially since consumers overwhelmingly want
to know if GMOs are in their foods.

Some
Interesting Ways To Diffuse Anger
With
everything that’s been going on politically, you could be getting into
heated and angry discussions with friends and relatives. According to Dr.
Robert Nay, there are several strategies to use to diffuse anger that you
might not have thought of.
The
first one is to ask the other person to sit down and if they are able, to
use a reclining chair. Dr. Nay says the brain interprets a seated or
reclining position as safe and relaxing which interrupts the adrenaline
you and the other person might be secreting.
The
second approach involves not going to bed angry. Going to bed angry
appears to reinforce the negative emotions.
My
approach would also be to meditate for a few minutes before going to
sleep, if you’re angry, as this changes your physiologic response since
you can’t hold the anger when your body is in a deeply relaxed state.
So…if
political anger strikes, you can take charge of diffusing the situation,
at
least within yourself.

The
Complex Human Brain
The Our brains are much more complex than we have thought. Our brains contain
around 86 billion neurons with half of them located in the cerebellum,
which coordinates muscular activities. A baby doesn’t start really
producing neurons until their third week after birth. At that point, the
baby’s body produces an astonishing 250,000 new neurons per minute. This
production of neurons continues through early in the baby’s life. All
this results in trillions of connections between neurons in the brain and
the rest of the body.

Common Sense Media reported that teens are actually spending 9 hours a day
using all types of media. This figure doesn’t include time used for
attending school and for homework. This nine hour figure includes just
entertainment time. The kids have become multitaskers with half the teens
reporting that they often or sometimes use social media or watch TV, while
60% say they text and 75% listen to music. When asked if they believed TV
or texting had an influence on the quality of their school work, 66% said
no it did not.
The
teens view of themselves did not match the results of a study conducted by
Stanford University where they found these multitaskers performed worse on
tests of cognitive control. Another study with 400 teens found that
compulsive texters were more likely to have trouble sleeping and they also
had a lower level of academic performance.
On the flip side, students who abstained from texting during a lecture
wrote down 62% more information during the class and recalled more
detailed information from the lecture. Non-texters also scored a full
letter grade and a half higher on a multiple choice test.
So…as a parent, you need to stay aware of what your teen is doing
with mixing social media and TV with school work.

Powerful
Video Showing People’s Reactions To Learning Where Their DNA Says
They’re From
I
watched this video and was very touched as it showed a group of people
talking about countries and nationalities that they didn’t like. They
then had their DNA taken and got their results. That’s the part that’s
powerful. What they thought their heritage was, wasn’t necessarily
accurate. Please take a few minutes to watch it. You’ll be glad you did.
