Responses To Food Differently
Israeli
scientists discovered that people’s bodies respond differently when they
eat the same foods. The scientists think it may be due to variations in
our microbiome, which is the bacteria that live in our gut. The
researchers believe this may lead to a personalized diet that could aid in
weight loss. From my standpoint, it may also lead to an understanding of
personalized optimal nutrition for each of us individually.

Choosing
Your Words
Is there a
difference between using the words “I can’t” and “I don’t? It
turns out that there is according to a study published in the Journal
of Consumer Research. The researchers found that when people used the
words, for example, that “I don’t drink soda” they were less likely
to drink soda verses when they said “I can’t drink soda”. The
researchers believe that saying “I don’t” is psychologically
empowering as the phrase implies that the decision is yours to make and
you made it while “I can’t” implies that someone else made the
decision for you.

Choosing
Your Thoughts Can Affect Your Surgery Results
Your
attitude can affect the outcome of your medical procedure. If you have a
bad attitude, the procedure may not go as smoothly. A report in Time
was about a study published in 2015 that looked at 230 people who
underwent procedures in which a catheter was inserted into a blood vessel.
Before the procedure, people filled out a questionnaire that asked them to
rate various adjectives describing how they felt emotionally, The
researchers found that people with more negative feelings had a greater
incidence of adverse events from the procedure, like slow heart rate or
abnormal blood pressure verse those who had more positive feelings.
So…going in for a medical procedure, think happy thoughts!

The
Dark Side Of Immunotherapy For Stopping Cancer
You
may have been reading reports on the amazing impact of immunotherapy to
stop many types of cancers. It revs up your immune system to attack the
cancer cells and it’s being viewed as a major breakthrough in treating
cancer. It turns out that there’s a hidden problem with this therapy.
Besides attacking and killing the cancer cells, immunotherapy can also
damage and destroy healthy tissues and organs. Patients have developed
other diseases and even died from the treatment. As an example, an
immunotherapy drug for advanced melanoma caused severe side effects in 20
to 30% of the patients
Some
of the 242 different side effects reported included effects on the skin,
gastrointestinal system, liver, endocrine and renal systems, diabetes
mellitus and pancreatitis which are totally unrelated to the cancer. You
can also have sensational results with complete remission of the cancer
followed by a number of the patients having a relapse just a couple of
months later.
The main
problem with our quickly moving into immunotherapy is that very few
studies are being done that focuses on the toxic side effects patients are
experiencing from using these drugs. Plus you couple this with the FDA’s
Breakthrough Therapy program that allows drugs to be approved before
toxicity is even determined and you’re looking for trouble down the road
for a number of patients. So…be wary when your doc says he wants to put
you on immunotherapy drugs, you may be getting more than you bargained
for.

Older
Hospitalized Patients Need To Exercise
A research letter published in JAMA
Internal Medicine reported on the importance of older hospitalized
patients needing to exercise. The researchers looked at the level of
functional and mobility decline in 177 hospital patients based on the
number of walking steps they took each day. For patients who walked fewer
than 900 steps per day, they had a decline of 55% in their functional and
mobility abilities while patients who walked more than 900 steps per day,
had a decline of only 18%. So…for an older patient in the hospital, my
advice is simple - get out of bed and start walking!

The
Lighting In Hospital Rooms May Make It Harder To Heal
A
study in the Journal
of Advanced Nursing looked at the impact of lighting in hospital rooms
and they
found that poor lighting actually worsened patients’ sleep, mood and
pain levels. To measure lighting, researchers use the concept of lux. In
this case they found that the amount of light a hospital patient is
exposed to is around 105 lux, which is a very low level of light. As a
comparison an office would provide around 500 lux and being outdoors on a
sunny day would provide 100,000 lux. As you can tell 105 is a very low
number.
These
lux numbers are important because your body requires a minimum of 1,500
lux for 15 minutes a day just to maintain a normal sleep-wake cycle and
4,000 lux per day for healthful sleep. The low lux in the patient’s room
resulted in a reduction of sleep time to just four hours of sleep a night.
Patients with these low light levels also reported having more depressed
moods and fatigue, which is the opposite of what you want them to
experience During the healing process.
Besides
being exposed to sunlight every day another option for the patient is for
the lighting to be full-spectrum, which means the lighting is simulating
the wave length of sunlight at noon in Florida on a sunny day. This full
spectrum light goes to your brain’s hypothalamus where it affects your
entire body since the hypothalamus is responsible for controlling body
temperature, hunger and thirst, water balance and blood pressure. It also
controls the pituitary gland, which is the master gland of the body.
So…take
a look at the Special Offer below for this month so you can have full
spectrum lighting in your home and office.
