It’s
The Holidays: The Benefits Of Dark Chocolate Keep Growing
The
benefits of eating dark chocolate just keep getting better and better (or
tastier and tastier – sorry, I couldn’t resist). A number of studies
have now been published confirming the health benefits from eating cacao
in the form of dark chocolate.
Here
are some of these benefits. You can:
1.
Slash your risk of cardiovascular disease by 37% and stroke risk by 29%
2.
Lower your insulin resistance, reduce your blood pressure and increase
blood vessel elasticity
3.
Reduce inflammatory diseases, metabolic disorders and help prevent cancer
4.
Inhibit persistent coughing by reducing vagus nerve activity.
5.
Lowers the risk of Alzheimer’s Disease.
So…this
is my tasty advise - Eat a small piece of dark chocolate that is 70% or
higher on cacao every day. You’ve got to admit this is a yummy
prescription!

Caregivers
Need To Take Care Of Themselves
As
the baby boomers age, more and more people will fall into the role of
primary caregiver for that aged person. While caregivers report a new
sense of purpose and closer ties with the person they are caring for,
there are also many negatives that the caregiver has to confront.
According to the National Institute on Aging caregivers have an increase
in the number of health and emotional problems, including depression and
panic attacks. They also skip health screenings and don’t seek medical
help when they need it.
What
can a caregiver do to take charge of their life again? According to
Virginia Sole-Smith there are five steps that have been researched and
backed by experts that you can take to lighten the caregiver role.
If
you are caring for an aging parent, keep treating them as your parent even
though it feels like you are the parent. This will help preserve your
relationship and your parent’s dignity.
Join
a caregivers support group as this will reduce your feelings of burden and
depression. You’ll also get practical caregiving ideas from people in
the group. There are even caregiving groups for specific illnesses, e.g.
caregivers of people with cancer.
You
must exercise! Exercise can remedy the top complaints among caregivers of
lack of energy, sleep difficulties, stress, pain and depression.
Learn
how to meditate or do mindfulness training. After 2 months caregivers
doing mindfulness training felt less depressed, slept better and believed
their overall quality of life had improved.
Ask
for and accept assistance. First, you need to realize that you can’t do
it alone. Next you need to ask other family members, friends and
colleagues to help.
So…if
you are a caregiver, keep in mind that you are not hopeless and helpless.
You can take care of the person and yourself at the same time.

The Benefits Of Cholesterol
We’ve
been told about the benefits of statin drugs to lower cholesterol levels
even though lowering cholesterol doesn’t change the death rate. We’re
finally starting to wake up and recognize that cholesterol has many
beneficial effects on the body. One could even say that cholesterol is
vital to human health and the real danger is that our cholesterol can get
too low, especially as we age. Let’s look at some of the latest research
supporting this statement.
Yale’s
Department of Cardiovascular Medicine reported that older people with low
cholesterol died twice as often from a heart attack as did people with
high cholesterol. Yes, you read this right, it was low cholesterol that
was the killer.
University
of Minnesota looked at 68,000 deaths and found that low cholesterol
predicted an increased risk of dying from gastrointestinal and respiratory
diseases.
A
study with over 15,000 people over 18 years old found that people with
higher LDL and total cholesterol levels had a lower risk of developing
atrial fibrillation, which is an irregular heart rate.
A
review article found that high total cholesterol doesn’t raise heart
disease mortality rates for people older than 40 to 50.
Columbia
University found that people with the lowest cholesterol and LDL levels
were twice as likely to die within three years compared to those with the
highest levels.
So…it’s
time to forget about no fat, low fat, 1 and 2% fat products and start
using whole fat products. And there’s another plus to this change and
that’s these products will taste better, too!

Coming
Up - A Dramatic Increase In Autism
According
to researcher, Stephanie Seneff, PhD, she predicts that by 2025 autism
will be affecting one in two children. Dr. Seneff is a researcher in
biology and technology and has published over 170 scholarly peer-reviewed
articles.
She
attributes this explosive jump in autism to the use of Monsanto’s
Roundup on crops and on GMO seeds. Seneff says that the effects of autism
closely mimic those of glyphosate toxicity which is the key ingredient in
the herbicide Roundup. Unless you buy organic products, you’ll find
glyphosate in most everything that you eat that has corn and soy in it
including corn syrup, chips and cereals. Glyphosate also in our beef and
poultry because the animals are fed GMO corn and soy.
While
there are other causes of autism, our food supply is a major component of
this projected increased rate of autism. While the USDA recently released
a study looking at pesticide residue in our foods, they did not test for
glyphosate because of “cost concerns”. How’s that for a non-excuse
for avoiding testing a substance that can have a major impact on our
kid’s health because of “cost concerns”. We need the USDA to do a
legitimate study on the impact of glyphosate as well as all the other
chemicals in Roundup that are labeled “inert” as they may be
increasing the toxic impact of glyphosate on our kids health.

Using
Essential Oils To Stop The Overuse Of Antibiotics On Farms
You’re
probably aware of the overuse of antibiotics in raising animals for food
consumption and that these antibiotics get into our soil and water causing
antibiotic resistant bugs to flourish. These antibiotics are used to
increase weight gain in the animals and because of overcrowded living
conditions to prevent diseases from killing the animals.
What
you may not be aware of is the use of essential oils to take over the role
of antibiotics without the negative side effects. Here are some of the
studies reporting these results.
A
study published in Poultry
Science found that adding oregano oil to chicken feed reduced the risk
of mortality from a common infection in poultry by 59%.
A
study in BMC
Proceedings found that using a combination of plant extracts resulted
in weight gain and protection against intestinal infection.
Another
study used turmeric, chili pepper and shitake mushrooms to also increase
weight gain and protection from infection.
Using
rosemary and oregano oil were effective against pathogenic bacteria and
achieved the same growth rate in chickens as the antibiotic avilamycin.
So…the
conventional farming industry is running out of excuses for using
antibiotics in animal feed and if more people buy organic this will put
even more pressure on those farms to literally clean up their practices.

Using
Cell Phones Is Having A Negative Effect
More
and more of us are using our cell phones for everything and especially for
playing games and texting. This is leading to a condition called Text
Neck. It turns out that 90% of us text with our necks bent forward. This
put a major strain on our neck and shoulder muscles, tendons and
ligaments. When you flex the neck forward at a 60-degree angle this put
the equivalent of 60 pounds of weight on your spine, leading to spine
degeneration and arthritis. The Millennial generation could become the
first generation where everyone walks around with their heads stuck in a
forward tilt position.
The
fix to prevent this is simply to stand upright and keep your phone 12 to
14 inches from your face when you are texting or playing games. And of
course there are apps to help you do this. They are Headup (https://apkpure.com/headup-protect-your-neck/pawnshop.headup.lite)
and Text Neck Indicator alert (http://text-neck.com/text-neck-indicator--a-mobile-app.html)
which let you know when you’re doing it wrong. I was recently on a plane
and watched a teenager in my row playing a game on an iPad. His head was
jutting forward from his neck as he played for an hour and a half.
