The
Amounts Of Sugar In Our Diets Are A Disaster
The
amounts of sugar we are consuming are creating terrible health risks for
us. A study published in JAMA
Internal Medicine looked at the added sugars in our diets. That’s
the sugar that gets added to processed foods and doesn’t even include
the sugar that naturally occurs in foods like fruit. Here are some of the
things the researchers discovered:
1. Between 1999-2004, American adults got 16.8% of their daily calories
from added sugar, while between 2005-2010 this amount decreased a little
to 14.9%.
2. 71% of adults got 10 or more of their daily calories from added sugar.
3. For 10% of adults this figure jumped to 25% of their daily calories.
The
researchers found that those adults who consumed 21% or more of their
daily calories from added sugars were twice as likely to die from heart
disease verses those who consumed only 7% or less per day. For the
adults who consumed 25% of their calories from this added sugar, their
heart disease risk tripled!
As
an example, if you stopped off for a blueberry muffin from Starbucks
you’d be getting 29 grams of sugar. This translates to four grams being
equal to one teaspoon, which means, if you do the math, that you are
having over 7 teaspoons of sugar from one muffin.
In
addition, most people are not aware that cancer cells must have sugar to
survive it doesn’t matter if the sugar is from prepared foods or from
fruits. Also, grains when they are digested are converted to sugar. The
cancer cells take the sugar from our system so they can continue to grow
and with the amount of sugar we eat, we are giving it a lot of
nourishment. There is a special diet called a keytogenic diet that
eliminates all sugars and grains. It aims to starve the cancer to death.
So…avoiding
sugar or at least reducing the amount you eat can pay major health
dividends for you. Finally, the only way you can get a feel for how much
sugar you are having is to become an avid label reader.

How
Medical Over-Diagnosis And Treatment And What To Do About It
I
just read an article in the New Yorker Magazine written by Doctor Atul
Gawande called Overkill on the avalanche of unnecessary medical care
occurring in this country and how it’s harming patients physically and
financially. He also focuses on several success stories that are happening
today. It’s an article that I think is worth reading, so here is the
link - http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/05/11/overkill-atul-gawande.

How
Much Exercise Do Men And Woman Need?
Are men
and woman the same with the amount and intensity of exercise they need? It
turns out that the answer is no. A 2009 study published in Neurology
found that men need vigorous exercise to reduce their risk of stroke. This
level of exercise helps the man recover from a stroke better and faster as
well.
A
2013 study found for women that walking at least three hours per week
reduced their stroke risk better than high intensity cardio.
So,
for men, get moving and for women, take a walk.

The
Best Way To Handle A Personal Trauma
When
a trauma happens, you can either talk it out or keep it inside. Which is
the best strategy? A study in The
Journal of Nervous and Mental Diseases begins to answer that question.
The researchers looked at US Army veterans who repressed traumas rather
than talked about them and they found that these vets who repressed their
trauma suffered no additional health problems and lived as long as other
vets. These vets were less likely to exhibit symptoms of post-traumatic
stress disorder. Talking about the trauma before they feel ready, can lead
to deeper suffering. So, make yourself available to a loved one who has
experienced a trauma and wait until that person is ready to share.

Baby Bottle Mimics the Human Breast
Breast-fed
babies have difficulty drinking from a regular baby bottle as the baby can
experience pain and digestive issues when the baby gulps air with the
formula or milk. In addition, the baby bottle nipple allows the baby to
suck milk faster than from a real breast, so the child begins to favor the
bottle.
A
company, Bittylab,
has come up with an answer. They designed the rubber nipple to solve the
problem. The Bare bottle causes the baby to latch onto the nipple when the
baby sucks on it so the baby controls the amount of milk and the pace at
which it normally drinks. The bottle is also designed to deliver the milk
air free. The company just won the Edison Gold Award for Innovation.

Using
Acupuncture For Knee Osteoarthritis Pain And Trouble Sleeping
A
study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society looked
at using acupuncture on people with painful knee osteoarthritis who also
had difficulty sleeping. The researchers thought that the pain from the
knee interrupted a person’s sleep. The acupuncture helped to ease the
knee pain and improved the patient’s sleep pattern.

The
Benefits Of High Cholesterol
After
years and years of warnings on avoiding cholesterol in our foods, it was
recently reported that high cholesterol in your food is nothing to worry
about. This raises another question, are their benefits of having a high
cholesterol level?
1.
Dr. Harlan Krumholz of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Yale
University reported in 1994 that old people with low cholesterol died
twice as often from a heart attack as did old people with high
cholesterol.
2.
A study comparing 19 large studies involving 68,000 deaths conducted by
researchers at the University of Minnesota found that low cholesterol
predicted an increased risk of dying from gastrointestinal and respiratory
diseases.
3.
Another study followed 100,000 healthy individuals in San Francisco for 15
years. They found that those who had low cholesterol had more often been
admitted to the hospital because of an infectious disease.
4.
Low cholesterol can increase deaths from chronic heart failure. A study
from UCLA Department of Medicine found that of 1,000 patients with severe
heart failure, 62% of the patients with cholesterol below 129 mg/l had
died but only 31% with cholesterol above 223 mg/l had died.
5.
From the research being done on LDL cholesterol, the LDLs have an
anti-bacterial effect.
So,
if your cholesterol is above 223 mg/l, you may not need to worry and go on
statins for protection.

Dry
Skin Brushing: A Way To Help Your Skin
Except for our face, we tend to ignore the skin on our body, which is your
largest organ of elimination. Dry skin brushing is a way to improve your
whole body’s health. Here are the benefits of dry skin brushing:
1. It stimulates your lymphatic system which is your cellular waste
elimination system. Dry skin brushing stimulates the movement of toxins
through and out of your system.
2. It removes dead dry skin while improving appearance, clearing clogged
pores and allowing the skin to breathe.
3. It may help soften cellulite and diminish the skins lumpy appearance.
4. It increases circulation to your skin which eliminates metabolic
wastes.
5. It can be a meditative experience reducing stress, muscle tension while
calming the mind.
6. It may help improve the functioning of kidney and aid digestion.
7. It feels good by your having glowing and tighter skin.
So…Using
the saying from an old toothpaste commercial - brusha, brusha, brusha over
your whole body and have some fun.
