Chemicals in Your
Cosmetics
What
chemicals are in your cosmetics? Are
they harmful to you? How can you find
out what they are? These are all good
questions and now you can get some
answers.
The Environmental Working Group has
created a website called the Skin Deep
Database which helps you identify safe
cosmetics.

A Way To Improve
Literacy For Children With ADHD
A
study published in Nutrition reported
that Omega-3 DHA may be able to improve
literacy in children with learning
disabilities.
In this study, 90 children some who were
ADHD between the ages of 9 to 12
participated in this randomized
controlled trial. The children were
randomly assigned to receive four 500 mg
capsules of either EPA-rich fish oil per
day, a DHA-rich fish oil, or safflower
oil per day.
After four months, the researchers
observed that an increase of DHA in red
blood cells which were associated with
improved word reading and lower ratings
of poor behavior. In children with
learning disabilities, the benefits of
DHA were even greater with significant
improvements recorded for word reading,
improved spelling and an improved
ability to divide attention.
In addition, parents observed better
behavior, lower hyperactivity and
overall ADHD symptoms.
So…if you have a child with ADHD, you
can experiment by giving the child DHA-rich
fish oil with a total of 264 mg of EPA
and 1,032 mg of DHA per day.

Using Yoga To Increase
Your Happiness
A
study done by Boston University School
of Medicine found that yoga reduced
stress, eased aches and boosted energy
levels. The end result was the
participants were happier and healthier.
To get these results the researchers had
participants doing yoga for an hour 3
times a week for 3 months. The yoga
folks had higher levels of mood boosting
brain chemicals as compared with people
who walked for the same amount of time.
So…yoga anyone?

Tamiflu for flu – Does
It Really Work?
You've
probably seen the ads for the most
popular FLU antiviral – Roche’s Tamiflu.
It’s supposed to reduce the duration of
flu by around 21 hours if taken in the
first 36 to 48 hours of illness.
It is also believed to reduce the risk
of pneumonia and other complications.
While Tamiflu generates around $3.5
billion a year in sales, is it really as
good as the amount of sales would lead
you to believe?
The answer appears to be that we don’t
know.
The Cochrane Collaboration, a highly
regarded independent organization that
analyses medical research, and the
British medical BMJ have been attempting
to obtain key studies that are supposed
to validate these claims.
Roche has not turned over the research
materials. BMJ reported that 8 out of 10
clinical studies that supposedly support
Tamiflu’s efficacy have never been
published and the other two studies,
which were funded and authored by Roche,
could not be relied on.
Now, the question is a simple one –
without seeing all the research, how can
we be sure that Tamiflu does what it
says it does or is it just a profit
center for Roche?
Here are
five things that
Forbe’s
thinks you should know:

Some Facts About Science
Fraud
I
found this article in Discover Magazine.
It listed 20 things you didn’t know
about science fraud from the past and
the present. I want to share several
with you.
1. Chinese scientists were three
times more likely to commit fraud as
compared to Americans while French
scientists were the least likely to
commit fraud.
2. Issac Newton fudged numbers in
his Principia which is considered
the greatest physics text ever
written. Even Freud, Darwin and
Pasteur seemed to have altered data.
3. In the 1980s, psychologist
Stephen Breuning published results
from fictitious trials of
tranquilizers; his findings affected
the clinical practice for treating
mentally retarded children.
4. The Department of Health and
Human Services’ Office of Research
Integrity estimates that there are
2,300 cases of misconduct among NIH-funded
researchers every year.
So…can we really trust studies that are
reported in the medical journals? The
problem is we don’t know which studies
are true and can be relied upon and
which have been falsified.

Eating Nuts To Stop
Disease And Illnesses
A
study published in the Journal of the
American College of Nutrition looked at
the diets of 13,000 people.
They found that those who ate nuts
decreased body mass and waist
circumference, lowered systolic blood
pressure, lowered weight and reduced the
risk factors for metabolic syndrome.
The researchers said that “nut
consumption was associated with a
decreased prevalence of selected risk
factors for cardiovascular disease, type
2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.”
Nuts work because they are composed of
healthy fat which your body needs.
By the way, peanuts are not a nut,
they are a legume.
So…make sure to eat nuts two or more
times per week and see if you can get
organic nuts which have not be
irradiated or pasteurized.

The Importance Of Magnesium
Magnesium
is a critical co-factor in more than 300
enzymatic reactions in our bodies. It
also affects virtually every organ in
the body, which makes it an extremely
important mineral that is has been
underutilized in this country.
Recently docs have been using magnesium
to treat patients with acute heart
attacks, chronic cardiovascular disease,
heart arrhythmias, diabetes, asthma, and
chronic fatigue syndrome which are just
a few of its positive impacts.
A blood test for magnesium is not the
best way to tell if you have enough
magnesium in your system since magnesium
is found primarily in the cells. This
means you could be deficient in
magnesium even though your blood levels
are normal.
A better test is the magnesium loading
test. In this test, you collect a 24
hour urine sample and the total
magnesium is measured. Then the person
is given an injection of a specified
amount of magnesium and another 24 hours
urine sample is collected. If the body
retains more than a certain amount of
magnesium, then it is concluded that the
body is deficient in magnesium.
The best forms of magnesium supplements
are chelated magnesium, magnesium
glycinate, magnesium aspartate and
magnesium taurate. The prescription form
of magnesium chloride is also useful.

Magnesium to Human Nutrition, by Michael
B. Schachter, M.D., F.A.C.A.M.)
