Kudzu
May Actually Have A Purpose – Curbing Binge
Drinking |
|
A
report in the Journal Alcoholism: Clinical and
Experimental Research, found that the herb,
kudzu, which grows abundantly in Southeastern
states, may be effective as a means of reducing
alcohol consumption. Subjects in the study who
regularly consumed 3 to 4 drinks per day were
given either kudzu or a placebo for seven days.
When they were subsequently given the opportunity
to drink as much beer as they wanted, the subjects
drank an average of 1.8 beers as compared to
3.5 beers for the controls. The subjects both
increased the time it took to consume their
beer and they decreased the amount taken with
each sip. So…just think… this roadside weed
may have a real use! |

Needle
Biopsies Of Breasts May Spread Cancer Cells |
Needle
biopsies are used in the diagnosis of breast
cancer. However, according to Dr. Julian Whitaker,
the safety or efficacy of needle biopsy has
never been scientifically confirmed. To conduct
a needle biopsy, the physician must pierce
the encapsulated tumor in order to obtain
samples for testing. In a study conducted
by the John Wayne Cancer Institute, researchers
found that women who had undergone a needle
biopsy were 50% more likely to have the cancer
from their breast tumor spread to the lymph
node adjacent to the tumor. The researchers
stated that the probable cause of the metastasis
was “the mechanical disruption of the tumor
by the needle.” |
|
So…there
are safer, non-invasive alternatives to needle
biopsy. One alternative is Thermography. This
uses digital imaging to measure temperature
variations in the body. This sensitive screening
tool can often detect tumors earlier than other
diagnostic tests. You can also use CT scans,
MRIs, PET scans and ultrasound. For more information

Understanding
How We React When Disaster Hits |
In
a crisis, our instincts can be our undoing.
Research shows that, when we are calm, our
brains require 8 to 10 seconds to process
each novel piece of complex information. The
greater our levels of stress, the more slowly
our brains’ processing time. When in a crisis
hits, our brains will actually move into low
gear just at the time when we need to moving
faster. In response to a disaster, many people
will often say to themselves “This can’t be
possibly happening to me.” Before deciding
what to do, they will check with four or more
sources including family, newscasters and
officials. |
|
In
a disaster, 10 to 15% of the effected people
will remain calm and act quickly and efficiently
whereas 15% will freak out. The vast majority,
however, will do very little; they are stunned
and bewildered. While we have a flight or fight
survival response that can get triggered in
emergencies, there is also a freeze response.
Freezing is what happens to a deer when caught
in the headlights. The deer freezes and it gets
hit by the car. When a disaster occurs, people
who are stunned are actually experiencing the
freeze part of the survival mechanism. |
|
According
to Mac McLean, who has been studying plane
evacuations for 16 years at the FAA’s Civil
Aerospace Medical Institute, there is a way
to override this freeze instinct and that’s
by training and by thinking about what you
would do in a disaster situation. A mental
plan will give your brain a road map to follow
when a disaster occurs so you won’t freeze,
and you will, instead, move to flee. So…think
about it before hand, so you are ready to
act if the necessity arises.

Yoga
- A Way To Keep The Weight Off Middle – Aged
Folks |
People
in their 50s generally put on about 13 ½
pounds over 10 years. Researchers found that
people of the same age who practiced yoga generally
lost about 5 pounds over that same 10 year period.
Researchers aren’t sure as to why this happens.
I can tell you since I’ve been doing yoga every
morning for the past 35 years, it makes a definite
positive difference in how you feel and function.
This may affect the chemicals in the brain that
signal satisfaction with food. |

An
Option When You Need Pepto-Bismol And There’s
None Around |
If
you’ve ever had diarrhea and there’s no Pepto-Bismol-type
product available, there’s an option you can
turn to. Drink a glass of wine (either red or
white is fine). One study found that drinking
up to 6 ounces of wine worked as well or better
than Pepto-Bismol. It seems the alcohol kills
the bacteria in 20 to 30 minutes. So…bottoms
up… as this situation is not the time to sip
and savor the flavor of the wine. |

Get
Out Of Hospitals Faster By Having A Hand And
Foot Massage |
Researchers
have found that after surgery, patients who
received a 5-minute massage to each hand and
foot saw their heart rates and respiratory
rates decrease which, in turn, increased proper
tissue healing. Patients reported that their
pain intensity and distress levels fell. They
were also able to get out of bed sooner which
meant they could speed up their recovery.
So…if you have to go under the knife, besides
having your family there, when you open your
eyes after the surgery have a massage therapist
there, too! |

Women
Have More Knee Problems Than Men |
Women
are up to eight times more likely as men to
blow out their knees when playing tennis,
skiing or dancing. It turns out that the ACL
ligament is weaker in women during the first
half of the monthly menstrual cycle. Researchers
at the University of Vermont found that the
risk of injury is three times higher during
menstruation and the following week.
|
|
To
protect themselves and their knees, women can
do specific exercises, such as, lunges and leg-raises
to improve balance and to strengthen the muscles
surrounding the ACL ligament to take some of
the stress off this important ligament. |
