INSTANT RELIEF FROM A LEG CRAMP

You're lying in bed and suddenly you get a painful cramp in your leg. You're preparing dinner and you get a painful cramp in your foot. Usually you'll attempt to grab the leg muscle or the foot to attempt to stretch and massage it, all the while screaming in pain (Do I have your attention yet).

Well, now you can stop leg and foot cramps in 15 to 30 seconds.   How, you say? Well, it's as easy as squeezing on a certain point on your lip. I learned this technique years ago and find it always works. One of the first times I did it was when I was playing soccer. One of the guys collapsed on the field with a leg cramp. I stepped over and grabbed his lip and 30 seconds later the pain was gone. He got up and started playing again. Unfortunately, he was playing for the other team and he was good, too!

To do the treatment, you'll find the point on the center of your upper lip. It's where the hollow is located. Take you thumb and index finger and place one finger in the hollow on the outside of the lip and the other finger opposite it inside the lip. And then squeeze your fingers together really, really hard. Keep the pressure up until the cramp disappears. (Once in a while it might take 45 seconds) 


FOR WOMEN WHO GET PMS

A study published in 1988 in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology found calcium can tame the mood swings and depression caused by premenstrual syndrome. In this study they gave 466 women 1200 mg of calcium every day for three months. The women's symptoms were reduced by 45%.

A great bonus to this treatment is that women will be getting some of the calcium they need to have daily. If you are going to do this remember to take Vitamin D with the calcium since the D is necessary for the calcium to be absorbed into the body.

HEADACHE DRUGS CAN CAUSE HEADACHES

That's right, the very drugs people take to get rid of a headache or migraine can start causing them. When you take pain relievers on a regular basis for more than two or three days each week, they can make the pain receptors more sensitive than usual. This means when the pain medicine wears off, these hyper-sensitive receptors turn on to produce a new headache. You're then going down the slippery slope of more pain medicines followed by more headaches and migraines.

To stop this vicious cycle you have to stop the medicine which means you're going to go through a severe and painful detox that will last for about three days.

Since even medicine like aspirin and Tylenol type substances can trigger the rebound effect, Dr. Fred Sheftell, the director and founder of The New England Center for Headache, believes the situation to be so serious that he thinks there should be labels on these and other drugs warning of the rebound effect.

IT'S GETTING TO BE MOSQUITO TIME AGAIN

Spring is starting to come happen where I live in Virginia Beach and with spring comes mosquitos. Yes you can buy bug sprays but do you really want that poison in or on your body. Well there's a natural alternative available that I wrote about a year ago in the Teplitz Report. Since there are so many new subscribers to the newsletter, let me share the solution with you again. It's Vitamin B1. All you need to do is take 100 mg every six to eight hours when you are going to be outside. 

The Army did the original research on this years ago. They sent two groups of soldiers out into the bush for two weeks. One group was given bug goop and the other group took Vitamin B1. When they came out of the bush, the group using the bug goop was covered with bug bites. The Vitamin B1 group had hardly any bites on them.

I went camping last summer with some friends who have hiked the Appalachian Trail. They were willing to use the Vitamin B1 and were surprised when they had no bites at all at the end of the weekend.

ALZHEIMERS CAN BE A MISDIAGNOSES

Alzheimer's disease is very bad stuff; however, medical doctors can misdiagnose it. Rather than having Alzheimer's the elderly person might be suffering from a Vitamin B12 deficiency. Correcting the deficiency with Vitamin B12 injections or 1,000 mg of oral B12 can improve mental functioning in the elderly.

If you have a parent suffering memory loss B12 would be a safe first step to take.

SINGLE PARENTS DO JUST FINE

In Prevention Magazine they reported on a study done at Ohio State University where they looked at a child raised by a parent of the opposite sex vs. one raised by a parent of the same sex. The researchers analyzed three studies of more than 11,000 kids raised in single family households. Regardless of whether the kid's parent was the same sex or the opposite sex, the results were the same. There was no difference in any of the scores that the researchers measured. The researchers thought the opposite sex parents were taking on both the male and female roles for the kids to see as role models. The researchers felt the key ingredient in the positive results the kids were having was the amount of personal involvement the parents had in the child's life.

 While this doesn't make being a single parent easier, this study should remove some of the concerns a single parent might have as to how well they are doing. Just make sure to give your child your time and attention.

TOO HIGH PROTEIN OR NOT TOO HIGH PROTEIN
THAT IS THE QUESTION


With all the controversy surrounding the notions of being on a high protein diet containing lots of fat as a way to lose weight, let me thrown in my 2 cents.

There was a study done where 12 women were given either a pure protein liquid lunch, a pure carbohydrate lunch or a mixture of both. The women who had the high protein lunch ate 31% fewer calories at dinner than the women who had the high carbohydrate lunch. When they had the combination drink their dinner time calories were cut 20%.

Another study done at Tufts University found overweight people who ate a high carb breakfast ate 81% more food in the 5 hours following breakfast than when they a high protein breakfast.

So it would seem high protein would be the way to go for dieters. However there is one key piece of information that most people are not aware of and that concerns what are the foods that make up the high carb diet. The answer is things like white flour products, white rice, and baked goods that use white flour. All these products get broken down quickly by the body and are treated like sugar.

Whole wheat and whole grain products are treated differently by the body.  They are broken down slower and absorbed slower and leave the body feeling satisfied longer.

So my recommendation would be if you are dieting you can go high protein for breakfast and lunch then focus for dinner on whole grain products, fruits and vegetables. And also take vitamin and mineral supplements to make sure you aren't missing anything
