Caregivers
Can Get Relief And Travel, Too!
For
many unpaid family caregivers, taking a vacation is unaffordable which
means they can’t recharge. A nonprofit organization, Road Scholar, has
stepped in to fill that gap by offering caregivers financial assistance of
up to $1,300 to join one of its trips in the US that cost $1,400 or less.
Some of the trips including spending five-days exploring New York’s
theatre scene or a six-day birding trip at California’s Monterey Bay. To
apply, the caregiver would have to go to their website at roadscholar.org/caregivergrant.

To
Sleep Better, Cut Your Use Of Your Cell Phone Or Tablet Right Before Bed
When
you are sleeping, there are specialized cells in the retina called
ganglion cells that are finely tuned to tell the brain to cut melatonin
production when they are hit by a short wavelength of around 480
nanometers, which is the blueish wavelength of morning sunlight.
Unfortunately, cell phones, tablet screens and LED lights emit a similar
bluish wavelength. This means if you’re reading off an iPad in bed, one
study found that the study’s subjects saw their nighttime melatonin
levels plummet 55% after five days. They took longer to fall asleep, had
less REM-stage sleep and were groggy in the morning. Basically, not a good
outcome for attempting to get a good night’s sleep. You want to stop
looking at the device at least an hour before bedtime.
The
researchers also found that someone reading a paperback book in bed had no
reduction in their melatonin level. So…to read the book off your iPad or
the actual book, that is the question…

LED Street Lighting Can Also Be
Causing A Problem
Not
only are our iPads and cell phones affecting our ability to sleep, but the
new LED street lighting is also suppressing melatonin. This effect is not
found from normal sodium lamps but from the new white LED street lights.
Even the American Medical Association unanimously adopted guidelines on
needing to minimize the potential harmful human health and environmental
effects from white LED street lighting. These white LED lights are
estimated to be five times more disruptive by suppressing melatonin at
night than sodium lamps. This would disrupt your ability to sleep.

You
Can Eat Carbs, If It's Resistance Starch
So,
you might be asking yourself what’s resistance starch (RS)? RS is a type
of carb that may help us burn fat faster instead of turning the carbs into
fat. Research is also beginning to point to RS having a role in treating
digestive problems, diabetes and even cancer. What makes RS so different
is that it looks like a starch but it acts like a fiber by passing through
the small intestine without being digested. This means RS adds no
calories. RS also triggers hormones that make us feel fuller so that we
will eat less during the day.
Let
me give you some examples of an RS food. While a raw potato is an RS, when
you cook it, it turns into a digestible and absorbable carb. If you let
the cooked potato cool before eating it, it almost miraculously turns back
into being an RS carb. With the potato, you go from carbs being absorbed
to no carbs being absorbed. Several other examples of RS foods are green
bananas, cashews, frozen peas and lentils.
Some
manufacturers are creating RS foods which results in lower calories.
Several manufacturer’s products include Bob’s Red Mill Unmodified
Potato Starch and Honeyville Hi-Maize Resistant Starch.
An
added benefit is that RS also feeds the good bacteria in our colon.
So…Let that potato cool and then eat it with cashews to get the benefit
of RS.

Nutrition
Affects A Childs's Social Behavior And Social Development
A
study published in Maternal
& Child Nutrition focused on how a poor diet negatively influences
early childhood development. The researchers analyzed a sample of 1,795
three-year olds from Mauritius, which is off the coast of Africa. The
researchers focused on four aspects of physical health and four indicators
of social development including low hemoglobin levels reflecting an iron
deficiency and cracked lips which reflected a lack of Vitamin B2 and
niacin. The researchers found a correlation between foods these children
ate and the negative impact on their health and social behavior.
The study also found that children who scored well had a more healthy diet
that lead to positive social behavior and a higher IQ.

How
To Overcome Bacteria That Is Antibiotic Resistance
Scientists
have recently discovered a bacteria that is resistant to all antibiotics.
This has led to the fear that this bacteria is be passing its immunity
onto other bacteria making all of our antibiotics useless. New need to
look in a new direction for our antibiotics and to me we need to at
natural oils and other natural substances that have antibacterial,
antimicrobial and antifungal properties. There have actually been many
studies done validating the impact of this approach.
1.
One study published in Poultry
Science found that adding oregano oil to poultry feed reduced the
death rate from ascites, a common infection in poultry, by 59%.
2.
A study published in BMC
Proceedings showed that combining certain plant extracts changed the
gene expression in chicken, promoting weight gain and protecting against
intestinal infections.
3.
An extract of shitake mushrooms, turmeric and chill pepper had the same
protective benefits as an antibiotic.
4.
A 1012 study found that rosemary and oregano oils were as effective
against pathogenic bacteria in chickens as the antibiotic currently used.
So…it’s
time to explore even further the power of essentials oils and natural
substances to protect us from bacteria drug resistance.

Physical
Activity Can Help Kids Do Better In School
We’ve
been reducing and eliminating phys-ed classes for years with the mistaken
belief that all kids need to do is focus on the 3 R’s – reading,
writing and arithmetic and that exercise is unimportant. A consensus
statement was published in the British
Medical Journal from a panel of international experts that looked at
fitness and health, intellectual performance, engagement, motivation and
well-being and social inclusion in kids.
The
experts looked at the amount of structured and unstructured forms of
physical activity from 6 to 18 year olds while they were in school and
during their leisure time. They basically found that physical activity is
very important for a child’s heart health and metabolism as well as for
their brain development and function. So…it’s time to make sure all
kids have physical activity as an important part of their day!

How To Swallow Pills If You're Having Difficulty
For
some people, swallowing a bunch of pills can feel like you’ve got to
climb Mount Everest (or at least a small hill). Here are several methods
you can use to get those pills down.
1.
The pop-bottle method. You can use this for swallowing large dense tablets
of the horse pill variety. First, put the tablet on your tongue. Next,
close your lips tightly around a plastic bottle filled with water. Suck
the water from the bottle and tilt your head back as you swallow. This
method was effective for close to 60% of the people in this study.
2.
The Lean Forward Technique. This approach was even more effective as it
worked for 89% of the people in the study and was used to swallow
capsules. To do this method you place the capsule on your tongue and take
a medium sip of water as you lean your head forward and swallow. By
tilting the head forward, the capsule rolls towards the back of the throat
making it easier to swallow.
3.
Turn Your Neck To The Side. When you turn your neck to the side, you open
what is called the upper esophageal sphincter opens which may make
swallowing easier.
So…use
one of these methods and swallow away!
