Having Desserts And Reducing The Impact Of Sugar On Your System  


A study published in Diabetes Care looked at the impact of having a bread roll after a meal of chicken, veggies and a salad verse having the roll before the meal. When the roll is digested it turns into glucose, which is sugar. The researchers found that the participant’s blood sugar level was 30% lower when they ate the roll after the meal. This means if you’re going to have that roll, you might want to wait to eat it towards the end of the meal and you’ll be reducing the impact of the sugar on your body.  

 

This finding will also effect the desserts you eat. Since you have desserts after the meal, you’re reducing the impact of the sugar on your blood sugar level. So while you don't want to eat too many desserts, you don't have to feel as guilty having some desert at the end of a meal once in a while.

 

Breakthrough On Understanding The Causes of Autism

 
Researchers are now getting a clearer picture of what is causing autism and it’s a multifaceted picture. A study in Scientific American found that 9 out of 10 individuals with autism also suffered from gastrointestinal problems such as inflammatory bowel disease and leaky gut syndrome. Restoring a person’s proper microbial balance could alleviate some of the disorder’s behavioral symptoms.

 

A study in PLOS One found that autistic children have a distinctly different gut microbiome than healthy children. These kids had fewer healthy bacteria and much higher levels of toxic volatile organic compounds in their body.

 

A study published in Cell found that altering the gut bacteria can directly influence autism-like behavior in mice and that fermentation of foods may be important in the healing of the children. Fermented foods produce a variety of phytochemicals and flavonoids that are rare to find in the human diet.

 

Finally, Assistant Professor Rebecca Schmidt at the University of California found that both folic acid supplements and maternal iron intake during a woman’s pregnancy can reduce the risk of autism in the child.

 

So…to prevent a child becoming autistic have the child’s stool analyzed to determine the state of the child’s gut flora and also have a urine test done to check for metabolites, which will give you a picture of the state of his or her immune system.

Yoga Breathing Is Even More Powerful Than We’ve Thought

Yoga and yoga breathing exercise have been around for thousands of years. While the physical part of yoga has become extremely popular, now the breathing aspect of yoga is coming into focus for its powerful healing benefits.

 

There’s a yoga breathing exercise called Alternate Nostril Breathing that scientists are finding that can help control blood pressure, improve heart rate, make arteries more flexible and turn down the body’s flight or fight response.

 

Here are some of the specific benefits from doing yoga breathing:

  1. Slow breathing activates areas in the brain connected with inhibiting depression.

  2. People with insomnia who did deep breathing for 20 minutes before going to bed woke up fewer times during the night.

  3. 10 minutes of deep breathing significantly reduced a person’s blood pressure.

  4. Doing deep breathing several times a day increased oxygen consumption by 37%.

  5. Yoga done twice a week for eight weeks significantly reduced anxiety.

  6. People with hypertension reduced blood pressure by doing a number of 30 minutes a day breathing sessions and the effect lasted a month later.

The Importance For Kids To Eat Organic

A study published in Environmental Health Perspectives found that when children eat organic fruits and vegetables, the amount of pesticides in their bodies declines significantly. The researchers included in this study 20 children living in Oakland, CA and 20 from in the agricultural community of Salinas, CA. In this study, the children ate a conventional diet for four days and an organic diet for seven days and then they returned to conventional foods for five days.

 

About 72% if their urine samples, collected daily, contained evidence of pesticides. Two of the detected pesticides decreased by nearly 50% and herbicides fell by 25% when the children were on the organic diet. So…if you can afford it, go organic for you and your kids as yours and their bodies will be glad you did.  

 


 Treating Anxiety Can Help You Live Longer

   
Our DNA has at the end of each chromosome a part called the telomeres. As we age, the telomeres shortens and the research shows that when it gets too short, we die.  Research published in The British Journal of Psychiatry found that people with untreated anxiety disorders such as social phobia, agoraphobia and panic disorder had shorter telomeres than people without these disorders. These people with the untreated anxiety were found to have telomeres that had aged 3 to 5 years more than those without anxiety.

 

When the people were treated for their anxiety and their symptoms improved. Ten years after they recovered, they had longer telomeres than those whose symptoms had improved for a shorter period of time. So…if you know someone who has untreated anxiety, encourage them to get into therapy.  


Plants Communicate In Powerful Ways

Scientists know that plants can communicate with each other when they are being attacked by pests. The plants will mount a natural defense against the infestation when they have received chemical signals from the other plants under attack. It's like Neighborhood Watch for plants!

 

Scientists have discovered another level of plant capabilities as reported in IFL Science. The researchers discovered that when a bug starts chewing on a plant’s leaf, the plant hears the vibration of the chewing and produces a phytochemical to defend itself from further harm. This means a plant may get chewed on small sections of leaves but the rest of the plant’s leaves will be left undamaged.

 

This means that plants have the power to do a better job of protecting itself than using chemical pesticides. We just need to understand that some damage to the plant doesn’t mean that the whole plant or all the plants in the area will be destroyed by the bugs.
