Outdoor
Scenes Can Calm Prisoners
Researchers
in Oregon experimented in a prison to see if they could positively affect
the mental health, suicide attempts and violence of inmates confined to
solitary for 23 hours a day. The researchers began by letting some of the
prisoners spend their one hour of free time in an exercise space that they
called the “blue room”. In the room, they had a projector playing
videos of open deserts, streaming waterfalls and other outdoor scenes. The
room was designed by Nalini Nadkami, who studies how nature affects
behavior with the intention of calming inmates. The inmates responded so
well that the guards now use blue-room time as a way to pre-empt bad
behavior. So…the blue-room seems to be way more effective than putting
someone into solitary confinement. Also, it might be interesting to experiment
putting this kind of space in schools to see if it can positively
affect children in a learning atmosphere.

Chemical
Giant Facing Lawsuits Over GMO Seeds
Agrochemical's
giant, Syngenta, is facing a growing number of lawsuits challenging its
release of genetically modified corn seeds that China had not approved for
import. These lawsuits are being filed in major corn growing states in the
US. It seems that industry practice is for biotech seed developers to wait
until major trade partners have approved a new GMO product before selling
it. It turns out that China had not approved this product and has
therefore rejected delivery of millions of bushels of corn.
Damages have been estimated at over $1 billion and it has caused US corn
exports to drop 85% from last year. It has also driven down the price of
corn that the farmers had already grown. So…stay tuned to find out
if companies like Syngenta have to wait for approval or if they can just
release their GMO products with absolutely no regard for farmers losing
millions of dollars in sales.

Using
A Blood Filter to Stop The Ebola Virus
A company called Aethlon Medical has developed a filter called
Hemopurifier to fight the Ebola Virus. The filter is a specially designed
cartridge that attaches to a dialysis machine. The filter contains lectin
that attracts the Ebola virus in the blood capturing it in the
filter. While it has worked successfully on one Ebola patient, it could
potentially open a range of possibilities of filtering other viruses out
of the body as well.

Stopping
The Pain From Shingles
Shingles is a painful, itchy condition that is caused by the reactivation
of the chicken pox virus when it moves into your sensory nerves. The
symptoms go from tingling or burning pain to a rash and itchy blisters.
Shingles can clear up on its own or you can take antiviral drugs. If it
continues, it can lead to post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) that is a chronic,
painful condition with few effective treatments.
According to Dr. Julian Whitaker, Chinese researchers have reported that a
group of patients that added hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) to their
treatment had significantly better outcomes in pain relief, speed of
blister and rash healing. Also, fewer of these patients went on to develop
PHN.
Another option to heal shingles is using intravenous Vitamin C therapy.
This approach has been shown to facilitate healing of shingles while also
reducing pain and preventing PHN. So…if shingles strikes you, you’ve
got some options to explore to get rid the the pain especially before it
develops into PHN.

Undo
Coronary Heart Disease By Developing Healthy Habits
Researchers
at Northwestern University found that young adults in their 30s and 40s
who drop their unhealthy habits and start heart healthy ones can control
and even reverse coronary artery disease. You’ve probably heard these
recommendation before: keep a healthy weight, don’t smoke, do moderate
to vigorous exercise at least 5 times a week for 30 minutes, limit your
alcoholic drinks to one a day for women and two a day for men and eat a
high fiber diet that contains lots of fruits and veggies.

Some
More Research Comparing Optimists Verse Pessimists
There
were two recent studies published that compared optimists verses
pessimists. The first one found that optimistic older adults had a heart
failure rate that was 25% lower when compared to the people who were the
most pessimistic (Published in Circulation:
Heart Failure).
The second study, which was published in the journal Neurology,
found that people who were highly cynical were more likely to develop
dementia. The researchers asked participants to say the level that they
agreed or disagreed with a number of statements. An example of one of the
statements was “I think most people would lie to get ahead.” The
participants that strongly agreed with these kinds of negative statements
were three times more likely to develop dementia than those who were more
positive. So…think again how you want to look at the world as it is
affecting your life!

The
Benefits Of Doing Yoga Just Went Up Again
A
study was published that looked at the benefit of doing hatha yoga for 50
minutes, 3 times a week for 7 weeks. The researchers found that doing yoga
reduced symptoms of fatigue and depression. With some participants, they
reduced their levels by more than 50%. The deep breathing exercises also
raised the participant's level of oxygen in their blood making them feel
more alert. Doing yoga also calmed the sympathetic nervous system, reduced
stress levels as well as feelings of irritability. So…you get powerful
results for just adding hatha yoga to your weekly exercise program. This
year was my 43rd year of doing yoga about 20 minutes a day and it's really
helped me maintain my flexibility

Your
Body’s Posture Affects Your Emotions
Research
published in Health
Psychology found that when you slouch when you are sitting and then if
you sit straight up, you can give yourself an instant mood lift. The
researchers looked at 74 participants who either sat upright or slumped in
a chair. The upright sitters actually had higher self esteem, were in a
better mood, had a lower level of fear and a stronger pulse response.
They also found that slouchers used more negative emotion words and fewer
positive emotion words when talking. So…get that bod sitting upright!
