Vitamin Supplements Reduce Hospital Stays & Readmissions
Researchers from Stanford, USC and the University of Chicago looked at
11 years of hospital data and compared outcomes with Medicare patients
who were prescribed nutritional supplements with those who were not. The
researchers found that the patients receiving the supplements received
significant health benefits.
The researchers found that 30-day readmission rates were reduced by
10.1% for patients with heart failure, 12% for those with acute heart
attacks and 8.4% for any other diagnosis. The supplements even reduced
the average hospital stay by 1.65 days which saved $3,000 per admission.
In these studies, supplements were only begun when these people were
admitted to the hospital. So…imagine if these patients were taking
supplements as part of their every day lives, they might not have even
had to go to the hospital!

The
Benefits Of Grass-Fed Beef
When it comes eating beef, you have two choices, you can eat organic
grass-fed beef or you can eat beef raised in confined animal feeding
operations (CAFO). Are there any real benefits to eating organic? The
answer is yes for a number of reasons. Organic beef doesn’t have
antibiotics feed to them, which prevents the spead of antibiotic
resistant diseases. Grass-fed beef also has 3 to 5 times the levels of
conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) which has been found to help us fight
cancer, decrease insulin resistance and improve body composition. The
organic beef also has higher levels of vitamins and minerals and a
better ratio of omega 6s to omega 3s.
Grass-fed cattle also are rarely sick. So… while organic grass-fed beef
may be more expensive, you are paying for a much healthier food source.

New Benefits To Cholesterol
That’s right, there are benefits to having higher levels cholesterol
than what is recommended today. Recent research has reported that
cholesterol plays a key role in regulating protein pathways involved in
cell signaling and it may also regulate other cell processes. Since we
have trillions of cells in our body, they need to be able to interact
with each other. Cholesterol is one of the molecules that allow these
signaling interactions to take place.
Your brain actually contains 25% of the cholesterol that is in your
body. It is critical for the formation of synapses which are how two
neurons communicate with each other. This allows you to think, learn new
things and form memories.
And if these aren’t reasons enough to relook at your cholesterol levels,
it is also involved in the production of steroid hormones which includes
your sex hormones.
You can figure out the right cholesterol level by dividing your HDL
level by your total cholesterol level. This percentage should be above
24. If it is below 10%, it’s a significant indicator of risk for heart
disease. Also, your triglyceride/HDL ratio should be below 2.
So… rather than immediately jumping into taking drugs for your
cholesterol levels, do some math first; otherwise, you may be losing the
benefits that cholesterol can have on your body.

New Neurons Cause Childhood Memories To Disappear
A study published in Science found that as the brain adds new neurons it
deletes or makes older memories foggier. What the researchers did was to
condition mice to fear an environment where they received repeated
electric shocks. The researchers then had some of the mice run on wheels
which boosted the number of new neurons their brains created while the
other mice were sedentary. After six weeks of running or being
sedentary, the mice were put back in the environment where they were
shocked. The runners had largely forgotten their fear while the
sedentary mice were still traumatized.
So…exercise may have an added benefit of getting rid of early child
trauma memories.

Supplements To Stop COPD
COPD is
know as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease which is a progressive
disorder that affects breathing. It is the third leading cause of death
and kills 138,000 Americans every year. There are some powerful natural
options for effective treatment.
One is using the supplement N-acetylcysteine (NAC) which finds and helps
break up the excessive mucus in the lungs, inhibits bacteria from
adhering to the lungs and has anti-viral activity. It is also a
precursor to glutathione which is the most active antioxidant in the
lungs. By boosting glutathione levels, you can help control COPD. One
study compared COPD paients who took 600 mg of NAC twice a day verses a
placebo group. The researchers found that the group taking NAC had half
as many exacerbations, shorter hospital stays and fewer readmissions,
while they also experienced improvements in forced air flow.
Besides
taking NAC, you should also consider getting a special prescription for
glutathione that you can spray into the lungs. Since glutathione in pill
form is absorbed poorly by the body, spraying it into the lungs avoids
the absorption problem by delivering the NAC to right where it is
needed.
Finally,
stem cell treatments can also make a difference. Dr. Julian Whitaker has
treated almost 200 patients using stem cells. His patients have reported
improvements in lung function. So…you’ve got some options you can pursue
that might make a major difference in the quality of life of a COPD
patient.

A Way To Drop COPD Readmissions
The Carolinas HealthCare System was able to drop its COPD readmission
rate from 21.8 percent to 13 percent within four years. The way they did
this was by applying a concept called root-cause analysis which wound up
proving that some assumptions the health care system was making were
wrong.
Initially, project leaders thought that most COPD readmissions were the
result of lax patient adherence to follow-up treatment. What the
root-cause analysis revealed was that problems with patients’ home
equipment, inadequate patient education, and poor access to primary care
were actually more prevalent reasons for COPD readmissions. So…imagine
if root-cause analysis was used throughout the health care arena, it may
alter the assumptions that are causing harm to patients.

Cynicism May Be Dangerous To Your Health
Cynicism
is a deep mistrust of others and psychologists consider it a kind of
chronic anger that develops over time. It’s been linked in studies to a
higher rate of coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease and cancer
related mortality in women . In a recent study published in the journal
Neurology, cynicism was also linked to an increased risk of developing
dementia. The study had 1,449 participants with an average age of 71.
The subjects took two tests. One measured the level of dementia and the
other measured the level of cynicism.
The people with the highest level of cynicism had a 2.54 times greater
risk of dementia verses those with the lowest cynicism rating. These
studies go along with all the studies that I have reported comparing
optimists to pessimists. So…if you’re reading this and saying you don’t
believe these findings, then welcome to the world of the cynic.
