Shutting Down Seasonal Allergies
What can you do when allergies are causing you to have itchy eyes,
wheezing, running noses and coughs besides turn to drugs? Here are a
number of natural options you can take to stop your allergy reactions.
-
MSM
(methylsulfonylmethane) is one of them. A study published in the
Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that
subjects who took 2600 mg of MSM found their upper and total
respiratory symptoms significantly reduced within seven days and
improvement continued for the 30 days of the study. It’s best to
start taking it before the allergy season begins .
-
Butterbur can really help allergies as validated in six
double-blind-placebo-controlled studies. One well-known brand is
Petadolex.
-
Rosemarinic acid relieves allergy symptoms by dampening the immune
response. It is available in supplement form from LEF.org.
-
Tinospora cordifolia showed relief from sneezing in 83% of the
patients, nasal discharge in 69% and nasal obstruction in 61% as
reported in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology. It can be found in the
herbal supplement Immune Modulator with Tinofend from Life Extension
Foundation and HistaEze from Designs for Health.
So…don’t
suffer, experiment with these alternatives and see how allergy free you
can become.

Free Knee And Hip Replacements
Several
large companies, including Walmart and Lowes, are offering employees
free hip and knee replacements. The employee can either get the
replacement done in a local hospital and pay their regular copays and
deductibles or they can travel to one of 4 top of the line hospital
facilities in the country and not pay a cent including all travel
expenses.
So how can they do this? What the companies are doing is paying a
“bundled payment,” which promotes streamlined efficiency and safety.
Since these four facilities do a high volume of these operations, they
have above average patient outcomes and low rates of complications.
Because of these factors, the companies actually expect to save money
even by giving the replacements for free.
So instead of having to fly to another country to receive reasonably
priced health care, this approach let’s you stay in this country and not
even pay a penney. Hopefully, this will become a trend that ups the
level of expertise and success in a wide range of treatments.

So Why Are Leafy Greens So Good For You?
A study published in Nature Immunology goes beyond the notion that
vitamins and minerals are the reason leafy greens are good for you. The
researchers explored how leafy greens can boost gut immunity by
activating an immune gene called T-bet. The T-bet gene then turns on
vitally important immune cells called innate lymphoid cells that protect
the body from infection by monitoring the harmful bacteria in your gut.
This leads to the production of interleukin-22, which can protect the
body from invading bacteria.
So, please pass the leafy green salad.

The Amount Of Food Dye In Your Food
Food dyes are found in all kinds of processed food from salad dressings,
to cheeses, soups and chips. Some children are more sensititve to these
dyes and eating over 30 mg of dye can cause behavorial problems in these
kids.
So, how much dye is in our foods? It turns out the first study to ever
be done measuring the amount of dye in foods was conducted by Purdue
University scientists. The researchers discovered that single servings
of some foods are higher than the 30 mg limitation for avoiding
behavorial issues.
To give you some examples, General Mill’s Trix cereal has 36.4 mg per
serving, Cap’n Crunch All berries has 441 mg and Kool-Aid Burst Cherry
has 52.3 mg. So… it wouldn't take long for a child to hit a 100 mg of
the dye and to go much higher every day. Read your labels and eliminate
artificial coloring as much as you can from your kids diet.

Early Detection Of Pancreatic Cancer
A
15-year-old, Jack Andraka, has invented a test for early and reliable
detection of pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is deadly because it
is usually diagnosed so late that current treatments have a very low
level of success. The boy developed a dipstick-type sensor to detect
pancreatic, ovarian and lung cancer that is 168 times faster, 26,000
times less expensive and 400 times more sensitive than the current
methods of detection. In addition, the test costs three cents, takes
five minutes and has a 90% accuracy rate. The test is being evaluated
for approval by the FDA.
How did
he figure all this out? He did it using Google and Wikipedia. So…maybe
the drug companies should turn over their research arms to kids – they
can probably do a better job than the companies are currently doing.

A Dogs Nose Knows
The ability of dogs to sniff bombs, drugs, and survivors in disasters
has just expanded. Researchers in Italy have trained two dogs to sniff
out the scent of prostate cancer in urine samples with a 98 percent
success rate. The dogs did this from a pool of 677 people some of whom
were cancer-free, others had low risk tumors and others had cancer that
had metastasized.
The current medical test for prostate cancer have a false positive rate
as high as 80%. Dogs have also successfully sniffed out lung tumors,
colon cancer, melanoma and ovarian cancer. So, let the nose that knows
sniff away.

Computers vs Written Note Taking In Classrooms
How can
we grow crops and preserve our soil? Crops that are planted annually,
which are most crops, leave fields nutrient-poor , resulting in reduced
future productivity. There’s a better option reported by Jerry Glover.
Glover is a senior sustainable agricultural systems research advisor for
the U.S. Agency for International Development.
Professors at Northwestern University decided to conduct an experiment
on the impact of how using computers to take notes in classrooms
compared to taking handwritten notes affected academic performance and
comprehension. The Professors band the use of electronic devices for one
quarter and then allowed it the next.
The Professors found that students who used only paper and pen to take
notes during the lectures earned the highest average grade for the
quarter. The students using computers to take notes also reported that
they were multitasking by scanning Facebook, shopping and even
watching sports. These students scored an average of four points lower
than the paper and pen note takers. The Professors describe the
importance of these 4 points as the difference between getting into
medical school or not.
In another experiment they conducted, an immediate quiz was given
following a live or recorded lecture. They found that the students
taking written notes outperformed the computer note takers.
From the work that I do with Brain Gym®, I realized that writing lecture
notes is a much more complex task for the brain to perform verse
pressing a letter on a key board or screen. You are also including more
of your senses in the process as you are looking at what you are writing
and using a variety of muscles to make the letters. Could it be that
schools that are eliminating the teaching of cursive writing may be
putting students at a disadvantage in their ability to learn and think?
Now that’s something to think about!
