Vitamin D May Lower Risk Of Alzheimer’s
Disease
A study published in the Journal of
Gerontology: Medical Science reported
that the highest average intakes of
Vitamin D reduced the risk of
Alzheimer’s disease by a whopping 77%.
The researchers concluded that low
consumption of Vitamin D precedes the
onset of Alzheimer’s disease.
The researchers analyzed data from 498
women with an average age of 79.8 who
did not take Vitamin D supplements. The
researchers assessed the intake of
Vitamin D from food frequency
questionnaires and followed the women
for seven years.
They found that the highest levels of
Vitamin D had the lowest risk of
Alzheimer’s.
If you take a Vitamin D supplement to
make sure you are getting a sufficient
amount, make sure its Vitamin D3 and you
can take around 5000 IUs per day.

Berries, Another Way To
Keep Brain Function
A study published in the Annals of
Neurology found that the regular
consumption of blueberries and
strawberries appeared to delay cognitive
aging such as thinking, remembering and
reasoning by up to 2.5 years.
It appears that it is the flavoniod
anthocyanidins in the berries that helps
protect the body’s cells from damage and
reduce inflammation.
The researchers used the data from the
U.S. Nurses’ Health Study, which began
in 1980 and collected dietary
information every fours years on 16,000
female volunteers. The nurses that had
the best benefit had the highest intake
of berries, which was more than a ½ a
cup once a week.
I suggest 1/2 cup per day!

There’s A Third Way To
Slow The Loss Of Mental Function – B
Vitamins
Researchers
from the University of Oxford and the
University of Oslo found that daily
supplements of B Vitamins may slow the
decline of mental function in people who
have mild cognitive impairment.
The researchers found that folic acid
and Vitamins B-6 and B-12 were
associated with a 30% reduction in the
levels of the amino acid homocysteine,
and improvements in a range of mental
tests. High homocysteine levels have
been linked to the loss of cognitive
function.
In this study, the participants that had
high levels of homocysteine gave a 69%
higher likelihood of correct word recall
compared with the placebo group.
So,,,take some Vitamin D3, berries and B
Vitamins and watch it improve your
cognitive function and reduce brain
loss.

A New Look At How We
Build Muscle In Our Body
It
used to be that the wisdom was for the
body to build muscle, you needed to eat
lots of protein and carbohydrates
because carbs fuel your muscles.
According to Ori Hofmekler, author of
several nutritional books, the body can
still build muscle even when it’s
deprived of food.
You might be saying, “Huh, how can it do
that?” It turns out that the amino acid
leucine in your body can signal genes in
your muscle to grow and build protein
even during times of food deprivation so
long as these amino acids are
circulating in your blood stream. To get
enough leucine, you need to be eating
dairy products especially quality cheese
and whey protein. The one draw back is
that you’ll need to eat a lot of these
leucine containing products to get the
quantities of leucine to build muscle.
The one exception is whey, which gives
you be amount of leucine you need by
eating 3 ounces per day.
Another study published in the journal
Medicine and Science in Sports &
Exercise found that eating 20 grams of
whey protein 30 minutes before
resistance training boosts your body’s
metabolism for as much as 24 hours after
a workout! This means you’ll burn more
calories even when you are doing the
same things as someone else during that
24 hour period.
So…a little whey protein a day, keeps
those muscles growing.

Eating Chocolate To
Lower You Body Mass, Yum
Chocolate
may lower your body mass index (BMI).
Researchers from the University of
California, San Diego published a report
in the Archives of Internal Medicine
followed the chocolate consumption of
970 men and women between the age of 20
and 85 who were from of heart disease,
diabetes and abnormal cholesterol
levels.
Even though chocolate consumption is
linked to higher calories and increased
intakes of saturated fat, the more
frequent the chocolate consumption the
lower the BMI. While this sounds counter
intuitive, it appears that the chocolate
increased mitochondrial and capillary
function, muscular m=performance and
lean muscle mass.
While the study didn’t measure the type
of chocolate, there has been a ton of
research validating the positive impact
of dark chocolate. So…let’s do a toast
with dark chocolate…lots of it!

Can you Overdose on
Water?
Can
you over hydrate if you are an endurance
athlete? The advice has been when you
are an endurance athlete like a runner
that you should drink ahead of thirst.
This advice is being challenged by Dr.
Tim Noakes.
Dr. Noakes used to believe that drinking
ahead of thirst was the correct
approach. However, since he accepted
into this recommendation 30 years ago,
he’s seen a dozen deaths that have
occurred in endurance events due to
drinking too much fluid. He’s written a
book called Waterlogged: The Serious
Problem of Overhydration in Endurance
Sports.
He’s actually found that over drinking
can actually worsen an athlete’s
performance. When you consume too much
water, your cells will start to swell
leading to gastrointestinal upset,
dizziness and soreness. Drink way too
much and your sodium can drop to
dangerously low levels. Dr. Noakes says
to use our thirst mechanism to trigger
when to take a drink of water since it’s
a 300 million year old warning system
for telling us when we need water.
Now, while there isn’t a lot of evidence
for drinking eight 8-ounce glasses of
water per day, it probably will not
cause you any harm. And…if you’re an
endurance athlete, use your thirst
mechanism to tell you when your really
need extra water.

Using Resveratrol May
Extend Your Life
Resveratrol
has been extensively studied and found
to have positive effects on everything
from cataracts to Alzheimer’s disease.
A recent study has also found that it
may have the power to expend your life
by mimicking the benefits of dramatic
calorie restricts, without the hunger
pains.
In this double blind study, researchers
gave obese but otherwise healthy men
either 150 mg of Resveratrol or a
placebo for 30 day. The benefits from
the Resveratrol included reduced blood
pressure, triglycerides, inflammation
and fatty deposits in the liver.
The researchers described these benefits
as a combination of calorie restriction
and/or endurance training. Not a bad
deal for taking around 150 mg of
Resveratrol a day.

Men Having A Heart
Attack Are Better Off Being Married
A
study looked at how being married
affects man’s behavior when he is having
a heart attack.
The researchers found that married men
having a heart attack arrived at the
Emergency Room 30 minutes sooner than
single guys. Here’s the interesting
part, the wives didn’t even have to be
there when the symptoms occurred.
The study’s lead author suggested that
“the husbands knew what their wives
would say and didn’t want them to be
angry if they delayed medical
attention.”
By the way, married women having a heart
attack didn’t arrive at the hospital
sooner than a single woman.
Now…for the single guy - to get you to
the hospital sooner, you can picture
what your mother would say. That should
do it!
