GMO Ballot Initiative Fails In
California
There
was a ballot initiative in California to
require Genetically Modified Organisms
in foods to be labeled so consumers can
have a choice. This freaked out the
companies like Monsanto and DuPont that
produce GMO.
They and their allies like Coca Cola,
General Mills and many others donated
around $50,000,000 to defeat the
measure.
The groups and organizations supporting
the passage of the initiative raised
only around $4 million.
The opponents of labeling produced
commercials that lied outright and even
said that the FDA agreed with their
position, which was possibly a violation
of federal law.
The Organic Consumers Association is
calling on consumers to boycott these
organic and "natural" brands that are
owned by major manufacturers. The amount
they donated to defeat the labeling
initiative:
-
PepsiCo (Donated $2.5M): Naked
Juice, Tostito’s Organic, Tropicana
Organic
-
Kraft (Donated $2M): Boca Burgers
and Back to Nature
-
Safeway (Member of Grocery
Manufacturers Association, which
donated $2M):“O” Organics
-
Coca-Cola (Donated $1.7M): Honest
Tea, Odwalla
-
General Mills (Donated $1.2M): Muir
Glen, Cascadian Farm, Larabar
-
Con-Agra (Donated $1.2M): Orville
Redenbacher’s Organic, Hunt’s
Organic, Lightlife, Alexia
-
Kellogg’s (Donated $791k): Kashi,
Bear Naked, Morningstar Farms,
Gardenburger
-
Smucker’s (Donated $555k ): R.W.
Knudsen, Santa Cruz Organic
-
Unilever (Donated $467k): Ben &
Jerry’s
-
Dean Foods (Donated $254k): Horizon,
Silk, White Wave
Even with all of this money, the results
were still close. The opponents of
labeling received 53% of the vote and
the supporters of labeling received 47%
of the vote. While we lost this time,
over 90% of the people in this country
support labeling, so its only a matter
of time before the GMO companies and
their allies lose.

Celery May Be A Treatment for Breast
Cancer
A
study conducted by the University of
Missouri found that an ingredient in
celery is a non-toxic treatment that can
stop breast cancer in its tracks. The
researchers found that the treatment
even worked on deadly, fast-growing
breast tumors by inhibiting cancer cell
growth and reducing the expression of a
gene associated with cancer malignancy.
The ingredient in from celery is
apigenin. It’s cheap, natural and it’s
the active ingredient in celery,
parsley, thyme and a number of fruits,
veggies and spices.
When mice were implanted with cells of a
very deadly, fast-growing human breast
cancer were treated with apigenin, the
cancerous growth slowed and the tumors
shrank. Blood vessels feeding the cancer
tumor also shrank which starved the
tumor of the nutrients it needed.
Another study found that when rats with
breast cancer were treated with apigenin,
they developed fewer tumors and had
significant delays in tumor formation.
All this sounds great, except the
researchers are having a problem getting
funding for human trials. That’s because
none of the drug companies will fund the
study. Since this a natural substance
that is cheap, there is no profit motive
for the drug companies to fund the
research. So…until the researchers can
get funding, we won’t know if apigenin
can stop cancer in its tracks.

Use Zinc To Reduce The
Impact Of A Cold
Years
ago, research started showing that zinc
could reduce the suffering from the
common cold. A new Canadian analysis
published in the Canadian Medical
Association Journal has confirmed this
outcome.
The researchers looked at the findings
of 17 randomized trials that included
more than 2,100 patients. The patients
were either given zinc or placebo.
The researchers found that people who
took zinc saw a significant reduction in
both cold symptoms and the duration of
those symptoms. They also found that a
higher does worked better than a low
dose.
While zinc works on adults, the
researchers found no effect on children.
So…feel a cold coming on get some zinc
lozenges and as they melt in your mouth
your cold will lose its impact.

Learn To Play Piano With
Help from Technology
How
would you like to learn how to play a
piano while watching a TV show? Well,
its looking like it can be done.
A computer scientist at Georgia Tech co
invented the Mobile Music Touch device.
The person wears a fingerless glove that
is connected via Bluetooth to a laptop
or cell phone that plays a song.
The computer program converts the
musical notes to vibrations and
stimulates the fingers to move to hit
the right keys in the right order.
Participants in the study were able to
learn the first 45 notes of Amazing
Grace in half an hour while studying.
The students scored the same on their
exam as the students who studied
regularly.
The researcher even has used the device
to help a people with spinal cord
injuries that require repetitive motion
therapy to regain movement. He wired up
quadriplegics and found that the MMT
boosted had sensation and agility.
The researcher thinks that MMT works
because it stimulates nerves in the hand
that causes the brain to devote more
neurons to explaining the sensations.

Vitamin D Keeps You
Limber, Too!
The
news on Vitamin Ds impact just keeps
getting better and better. A study from
Wake Forest School of Medicine found
that as we age we lose our ability to be
limber.
The researchers found that Vitamin D
keeps a person limber. In the study, the
70 to 79-year-olds with the highest
levels of Vitamin D were the least
likely to have trouble walking and stair
climbing.
The Vitamin repaired muscle and
maintained lower-body strength. Pretty
cool results.
So…get a blood test done so you’ll know
that your level of Vitamin D is and then
take a Vitamin D3 supplement. You want
to get into the optimum range with is 50
to 70 ng/lt.

A New, Old Grain Is Now
Available
There’s
an ancient grain that was first
cultivated in Egypt and is now being
farmed organically in the US. It’s
called Kamut and it is high in selenium.
It also contains up to 40% more protein
than conventional wheat. It’s favor is
described as similar to brown rice.
One brand that you can check out is
Bob’s Red Mill Kamut Berries.

Getting Iron Into A
Woman’s Diet Reduces Birth Problems
Cambodia's
women have a major problem with anemia,
which has resulted in premature labor,
hemorrhaging during birth, and poor
brain development among their babies.
Chris Charles, a graduate student from
the University of Guelph in Canada,
figured out a brilliant way to work with
the locals to increase the amount of
iron in their diet without changing
their eating habits.
Iron pots are expensive, so getting new
cookware wasn't an option. Neither was
asking them to buy iron-boosting pills.
So Charles came up with an idea. He
shaped iron blocks like a fish which are
3 to 4 inches long. The locals consider
a fish to be lucky. The person leaves
the iron fish in a pot while water
boils. This provides the villagers with
75 percent of their daily iron
requirement.
Better still, the fishes are only $1.50
each and can last for up to three years.
Since the fish was introduced, anemia
levels have drastically declined and
villagers have started feeling much
healthier as a result.
Iron deficiency affects 3.5 billion
people around the globe, proving that
Charles's idea has world-changing
potential.
