Kids With
ADHD React To Certain Food Additives & Preservatives
A study reported in The Lancet states that the
symptoms of kids with ADHD worsened when they consumed foods
having certain food colorings and preservatives in them.
Some of the culprits included the preservative sodium benzoate,
tartrazine, quinoline yellow, and allura red AC. All these are
used in carbonated drinks, fruit juices, jams, pickles, candy,
soft drinks, cereals, pastries, soups, gums and other processed
foods.
So…if you
haven’t been doing it, it’s time to read food labels and
eliminate these substances for the health of your kids.
A Possible Treatment To Prevent Macular
Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration is
a
loss of vision that starts in the center of the visual field
(the
macula) because of damage to the
retina, and is a leading cause of blindness in older
individuals. A study published in the medical journal Nature
Medicine gives hope to adults suffering from this
debilitating disease. In this study mice were fed omega-3 fatty
acids, which are found in fish, flax seeds, chia seeds, walnuts
and many other foods. The researchers found that the omega-3
helped repair and prevent retinal damage in the mice and all it
took was a 2% change in dietary omega-3 to achieve a 40 to 50%
decrease in the disease.
Since omega-3
has been found to be beneficial for a number of health problems,
it would be good to add this to your diet if you suffer from or
are at risk for age-related macular degeneration.
Something
Most Don’t Think About – Cleaning Your Ears
Yep, I know that cleaning your ears isn’t on anyone’s top ten
list. However, you can have wax build up in your ears that can
prevent you from hearing well. So, is there an easy way to do
something about it? The answer is yes! This process came from
Dr. Julian Whitaker.
1.
Put a tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide in a glass of warm water
for several minutes.
2.
Once the peroxide is adequately warmed, tilt your head to the
side and place a few drops into your ear.
3.
Keep your head to the side for about three minutes.
4.
Turn your head and let the peroxide drain from your ear.
5.
Wipe out the interior of the ear with a cotton cloth when you
are done.
6.
Repeat on the other side.
So…this puts a
new meaning to Shakespeare’s “double, double, toil and trouble.”
The Sex Questions Your Doc Won’t Ask – But
Needs To
Postmenopausal women who are sexually active rarely hear their
doctors asking about sexual problems like pain and dryness. Less
than 9% of doctors ask adult women about these issues. So…since
your doctor won’t raise the subject, you need to get over your
embarrassment and tell your doctor if you are having these or
other sexuality issues.
Stop Taking Antibiotics Before Common
Dental Procedures
According to the American Medical Association, there is no proof
that antibiotics taken before common dental procedures,
including extractions, prevent heart infections by preventing
bacteria from getting into the bloodstream. Instead, the risks
of side effects from the drugs and from your developing
antibiotic resistance outweigh the benefits.
The only
exceptions are for people who have already had heart infections
(called endocarditis), have artificial heart valves, or other
serious heart-related health problems. So…if your dentist offers
drugs (the antibiotic kind) and you don’t have any of those
problems, say thank you, but no thank you.
Got Asthma? Get Checked On How You Use
Your Inhaler
A study reported in Prevention (February 2008) discovered
that 33% of patients who use inhalers for asthma or chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease are using them incorrectly. By
having their doctors demonstrate how to use it, the rate of
misuse was cut by more than half. So…if you use an inhaler,
don’t assume you’re using it correctly. Get your technique
checked out by your doc – see if you deserve the Gold Medal for
proper inhalation technique.
Helping To Alleviate The Symptoms Of
Parkinson’s Disease
Dr Julian Whitaker in his September newsletter talked about the
use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) to reduce the symptoms
of Parkinson’s disease, with “astounding” results in some
cases. In HBOT a person is placed in a pressure chamber similar
to the ones scuba divers use to decompress from the bends. HBOT
floods the body with oxygen and stimulates the growth of new
blood vessels that nourish the brain. It also promotes the
regeneration of neurons while it slows the death of neurons in
the region of the brain that Parkinson’s affects.
Dr. Whitaker
reported that HBOT improved symptoms such as rigidity, posture,
gait, tremors, speech and facial expressions, as well as the
ability to carry out the activities of daily living. Dr.
Whitaker also uses intravenous gluthathione in conjunction HBOT.
So…if you know
someone with Parkinson’s, see if you can get them to a HBOT
chamber. You can do a Google search to find out if there’s a
chamber near you.
Some More Ideas On Figuring Out Where The
Bread Plate Is
I was surprised when several readers of the Teplitz Report chose
to email me about what I wrote last month about where to put the
bread plate. I didn’t know there were several methods being
taught to kids.
Here’s a tip
that came from reader Laurie Honnigford – “Just remember “BMW.
Moving from left to right at a place setting, you have bread,
meal, water. It also helps you
figure out which is the glass that YOUR napkin is in.”
I don’t know if
this is easier than the two ok signs I shared last month, since
you have to remember to start from the left and move right.
Maybe I ought to do a poll to find out what is the method most
preferred by readers…on second thought, maybe I won’t. I guess
you’ll just have to decide for yourself.
