Dear <$firstname$>, here's
your Teplitz Report for
January!
Thanks for another great

healthy, fantastic and
prosperous 2011.
Natural Approaches To
Fighting Alzheimer’s
Disease
Now there are more
natural alternatives
available to help
prevent Alzheimer’s
disease. One is coconut
oil. Another is fish
oil, which may reduce
the inflammation
associated with
dementia. The DHA in
fish oil converts to
neuroprotectins, which
protect nerve tissue.
One study suggests that
DHA may reduce the risk
of Alzheimer’s by a
third.
There is a Japanese food
called natto, which is a
fermented cheese-like
soy food, that contains
an enzyme called
nattokinase which
dissolves clots. It is
now being studied for
its ability to dissolve
the beta amyloid plaques
formed in the brain
during the development
of Alzheimer’s.
A study from the
University of California
at Irvine showed that
mice with cognitive
impairment had dramatic
improvement with
niacinamide
supplementation. In
doses of 2000 to 3000
milligrams the results
bordered on amazing. The
niacinamide completely
prevented cognitive
decline. It even
improved the memory of
the mice without
Alzheimer’s.

Some Confusion About Vitamin D
While a committee of the National
Institute of Standards and Technology
reviewed the research on Vitamin D and
recommended increasing the amount of
Vitamin D from 400 IU’s per day to 600
IU’s per day, still there are questions
about how they reached that decision and
whether the dose increase is high
enough.
Well, it turns out the members of this
Committee do not include any of the top
researchers on Vitamin D. This means
that those with the most expertise on
the subject were not involved in the
decision-making process.
When you look at the recommendations of
the Committee, it differs sharply from
what the experts recommended because the
Committee limited its review only to the
impact that Vitamin D has on bone
health. The experts have been finding
positive effects for Vitamin D3 in many
areas and are recommending increasing
Vitamin D3 to anywhere from 2500 to 5000
units per day. They have found that
optimizing your level of Vitamin D can
cut the risk of several cancers by 50%
and the risk of developing heart disease
or diabetes by 43%.
Finally, while the Committee said that
most Americans have adequate levels of
Vitamin D, the experts said that about
85% of the US population is Vitamin D
deficient.
So who is right? I am going with the
real experts. By using supplements
coupled with blood tests, I’ve been able
to raise my level of Vitamin D from 14
to the optimum level of 50 to 70 units
(I’m at 56 units). What decision are you
going to make for your self?

A New Way To Protect Against Sunburn
What if you could be out in the sun and
not use sunscreen and not burn. Well, it
seems that you may be able to do just
that. There is a carotenoid extracted
from algae called astaxanthin that
prevents sunburn. Eating this algae is
how krill prevent themselves from being
damaged by the rays of the sun. Current
research shows that 2 mg of astaxanthin
a day for 1 month is an appropriate
supplementation to prevent sunburn.
There are other benefits of using
astaxanthin which include preventing
age-related macular degeneration of the
eyes and cataracts. It will even reduce
the effects of being exposed to EMF when
flying and diagnostic x-rays.
Keep in mind that it takes a number of
weeks for it to build up in your
tissues. So….2 mg of astaxanthin a day,
anyone?

Text Message Shorthand Has Been Around A
Long Time
The notion of using shorthand when
typing on Twitter or sending text
messages is a lot older than you’d
think. An exhibit at the British Library
displays a text message in a poem which
says “I wrote 2U B 4.” This certainly
sounds like a message anyone today might
send.
Well, it turns out this was written in
1867! This may help teachers relax
knowing that the English language will
probably survive even text messages.

We May Be Misdiagnosing ADHD
It turns out that there may be a
tremendous amount of misdiagnosis
occurring when identifying children as
exhibiting attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). As a
matter of fact, it could involve around
one million children. What’s the
misdiagnosis?
The year that a child starts attending
school is based on their birth date.
This means you can have kids in a class
that are the oldest by almost a year and
the youngest by almost a year. This
great difference in age may then be
reflected in the behavioral development
of a child. This difference seems to be
a key factor in the diagnosis of ADHD as
the behavior of the younger ones is
compared to the behavior of the older
children in a class. So perhaps for a
number of children the symptoms of ADHD,
such as fidgeting and inability to
concentrate, simply may be a factor of
the younger children’s age, especially
when compared to the behavior of older
children. The researchers who published
this study in the Journal of Health
Economics put the misdiagnosis figure at
20%.
Maybe the simple solution would be to
hold your kids back from starting school
if they would be the youngest in the
class,or to group kids by their birth
date so they are with kids who are
expected to be just like them in
behavioral development.

Honey
-A Way To Treat MRSA
MRSA is an infection that is running
rampant in hospitals and has been
spreading into the community. It is
dangerous and can be deadly. At this
point there is only one antibiotic,
Vancomycin, that still seems to be able
to fight and cure MRSA and doctors think
that will fail in the near future.
Fortunately, there is a natural option
available which is Active Manuka Honey
that is collected from the tea tree bush
in New Zealand. A substance in the honey
called Unique Manuka Factor is able to
completely eliminate staph. aureus and
MRSA bacteria in the wound. One of the
pluses of using this honey is that there
are no side effects to be concerned
about so you can use it for as long as
it takes the infection to clear.

A Way To Reduce Global Warming
With all the concern about global
warming, a realization has developed
that cows produce a lot of methane gas,
which contributes to the destruction of
ozone and the trapping of heat in the
atmosphere. Methane, for example, is 21
times more effective at trapping heat in
the atmosphere than carbon dioxide, when
compared over a 100-year period.
So how do you stop cows from doing what
comes natural – passing gas? It turns
out the answer is oregano. Penn State
researcher Alexander Hristov found he
could reduce the amount of methane
produced in the cows’ rumen (a portion
of the stomach in grazing animals such
as cows, goats and sheep) by using an
oregano-based food additive. The
additive appears to reduce dairy cows’
methane emissions by about 40 percent,
with the bonus of increasing milk
production by the not insubstantial
amount of three pounds per day. Similar
results have been announced by Newcastle
University which announced that curry
spices had an effect similar to oregano.
According to the data submitted by each
nation member of the UN’s Climate Change
Convention, the reduction in the amount
of greenhouse gas in the US is
comparable to the amount of methane
produced in 2008 by Switzerland, and
about twice the emissions of Norway.
Unfortunately, we don’t have stomach
rumen, but it might not hurt to pass the
oregano.

Another Option For Treating ADHD –
Change The Lights
The Summit Charter School in Maitland,
Florida is a special school for children
who are learning disabled. They have all
the diagnostic letters represented at
the school - ADD, ADHD,
Manic/Depressive, etc. All the
fluorescent lighting in the school uses
cool white tubes.
I talked with the head of the school
about doing an experiment with the full
spectrum tubes that are available from
my supplier. The principal agreed and I
convinced my supplier to donate a couple
of cases of tubes. The principal first
had all the teachers involved in the
study keep statistics on their kid’s
behavior, attention, concentration, etc,
for six weeks while they were still
under the cool white tubes.
They then swapped the tubes with the
full spectrum tubes and had the teachers
keep the same stats for the next six
weeks. To say that the teachers were
blown away by the positive impact of
just changing tubes would be an
understatement.
The change even had a very positive
impact on how the teachers felt and
performed in the classroom. The changes
were so positive that, when it was time
to take the full spectrum tubes out of
the initial classrooms and put the cool
white tubes back up so the research
could be repeated in several other
classrooms, one of the teachers wrote
the principal.
What she wrote was very powerful.
She said, “If you attempt to take these
full spectrum lights out of my classroom
I will fight you and I’ll even change
the locks on my door!” Now, that’s
commitment!
If you’d like to watch some video
testimonials and watch me demonstrating
