Should You Take Vitamins When You Have Cancer?
According to Dr. Julian Whitaker the answer is yes! In his newsletter, Dr. Whitaker discusses a landmark book, Cancer and Nutrition, published in the 1990s by oncologist Charles Simone, MD. Simone cites to numerous studies which indicate that vitamins and minerals do not interfere with chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Rather, he points out, some vitamins and minerals used with chemo and radiation can protect normal tissues and help in the destruction of cancer cells. This work was recently confirmed in research conducted by Dr. Jeanne Drisko.

One metaphor for cancer in the body is like having a termite infestation in your house where the termites cause major damage. You use chemicals to poison the termites. Once they are gone, there is still a problem because the termites have destroyed parts of the structure of the house. Reconstruction work needs to be done to get the house back to where it was before the termites attacked it. So you go to the hardware store and buy what you need to rebuild. Well, I consider vitamins and minerals the materials for rebuilding your body after chemo or radiation therapy.

Vitamins And Minerals To Take Before Surgery

In addition to using vitamins and minerals with chemo and radiation, consider taking vitamins and minerals before and after surgery. If you or someone you know is facing surgery, you can strengthen the immune system before undergoing the surgery. There is research that I’ve previously written about which demonstrates that people who take vitamins dramatically reduce their complications after surgery. I've given the recipe below to many people and the feedback is always that they healed faster than their doctors expected.

In keeping with the house metaphor, vitamins and minerals prior to surgery are like having the construction materials on site before you start the repair project. These vitamins and minerals are the body’s building blocks. Unless you have these materials for rebuilding the body on site prior to your surgery, it's going to take longer for you to heal.

Here are my recommendations. First, as best you can, divide the following dosage recommendations by the number of meals that you eat each day. The vitamins and minerals will absorb better when taken in smaller doses and taken with food. Start taking them 10 days to 2 weeks before surgery. Continue taking them for several weeks afterwards. When you are finished healing, don’t stop the vitamins and minerals immediately, instead, slowly taper slowly off the vitamins and minerals. Take a week to ten days to finally stop. (Actually, I'd recommend you continue taking the vitamins and minerals in lower doses, long past the end of surgery to maintain optimum health). If you are taking blood thinners, talk to your doctor first.

1. Vitamin C with bioflavinoids – get 500 mg tablets of Vitamin C with 100 mg of bioflavinoids. Total per day - 2,000 mg Vitamin C
2. Vitamin E – 800 IU (make sure the label says d-alpha tocopheryls and not dl... The "d" is the important piece as it means it’s natural).
3. Beta Carotene – 75 mg
4. Zinc – 50 mg
5. B-Complex – High potency - where most ingredients add up to 100 mg per day
6. Multi Mineral – Ask for a high potency one
7. Vitamin A – 5000 to 10,000 mg
8. Vitamin D – 800 IU
9. The amino acid arginine – 2 mg three times per day on an empty stomach
10. Bromelain – 1,000 mg (Don't take if you are allergic to pineapple or papaya)

To prevent bacteria and viral infections after surgery, take Echinacea and Astragalus - double the suggested dose on the label.

A Better Option For Lung Surgery
Regular lung surgery requires cutting major body muscles and spreading the ribs to gain access to the lungs. Now there’s a better, less invasive choice called video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) which uses a tiny camera inserted just below the armpit. Instead of spending 10 days in the hospital after regular surgery, VATS results in an average stay of 3 days in the hospital. It means that patients can get back to work and living much sooner. In addition, they are able to exercise within days of the surgery. That’s a pretty major difference! To learn more about this treatment, go to www.cedars-sinai.edu/1526.html.

Finding Information About Treating Breast Cancer
You can now go online and find some excellent sources for learning about treatments for breast cancer. Here are some of them:
1. National Cancer Institute – It’s an excellence resource for learning about clinical trials, locating cancer centers in your region and for ordering publications about breast cancer. Call 800 422-6237 or go to www.cancer.gov.
2. CollaborativeCare.net – Gives the risks and benefits for different treatments of ductal carcinoma in situ and early-stage breast cancer. Go to www.collaborativecare.net.
3. Adjuvant! – This is an online computer program designed to help women and their physicians discuss post-surgical treatment options. It helps you understand the factors in having a recurrence or death. Go to www.adjuvantonline.com.

How To Treat A Baby With Colic
Babies who cry at least three hours a day, three days a week, for more than three weeks are defined as having colic. In the US, 15 to 30% of the newborns are afflicted with colic. That’s a lot of devastating noise for the parents and suffering for the baby. As an alternative to giving newborns drugs that can have severe side effects, try using fennel. A study published in 2005 looked at 93 breastfed colicky infants. For seven days they received a dose of a fennel mixture twice daily prior to breast feeding. Their crying time dropped to around two hours per day in 85.4% of infants in the fennel group whereas the control group dropped by only 48.9%. Also, there were no adverse reactions to the fennel whereas there were side-effects to drugs that were given to the babies.

So…there are two ways to get to fennel. One is you can buy “gripe water” at drug and health food stores. It contains fennel and other anti-colic herbs. The other way is to simmer 1 tablespoon of fennel seeds in 1 cup of water for 15 minutes. Strain the seeds and give it to the baby one teaspoonful at a time, until the symptoms improve.
