The Cause Of Autism May Not Be In The Brain
An article in Alternative Medicine magazine by author Jill Neimark reports that there is a new emphasis on the connection between autism and the interaction of genes and environment triggers, as well as the impact from exposures to toxins and infections. These environmental factors may be triggering genes to misfire leading to chronic inflammation in the brain, immune system and digestive system. Scientists are now discovering that this inflammation is treatable. In a paper published in Clinical Neuropsychiatry, Dr. Martha Herbert states that autism is a disorder of the body that affects the brain. Dr. Herbert reports that many doctors have noticed when autistic children go for diagnostic tests where they can’t eat or drink before hand their symptoms improve, until they start eating again!
A study reported in 2005 in the Annals of Neurology, Dr. Carlos Pardo found inflammation in brain cells that are important to the brain’s immune response in a group of autistic patients from age 5 to 45. Many autistic kids have a history of food and airborne allergies, or having 20 to 30 ear infections a year, or eczema, or chronic diarrhea.
To tie this together, Pat Levitt, director of the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Research on Human Development, found that a gene called MET doubles the risk of autism. It turns out this gene also affects the functioning of the nervous system, gut and immune system. The gene is also affected by excessive exposure to toxins. Jill James, director of the Autism Metabolic Genomics Laboratory, found that many autistic children make very little of a compound called glutathione, which is the cell’s most abundant antioxidant. This lack of glutathione results in chronic inflammation.
Finally, researchers are finding that the industrial chemicals in the environment may be impairing brain development of children around the world as cited recently in The Lancet.
If you know someone who is autistic, you can have them research a group called Defeat Autism Now! (DAN!) as their treatments focus on intestinal issues, detoxification, nutrition and neuro-inflammation - http://www.autismwebsite.com/aRI/dan/dan.htm. You can also investigate treatments developed by molecular biologist and naturopath, Amy Yasko.
So…autism is beginning to move from helpless to hopeful for the kid and adults who are affected by it.
Allergy Problems? Your Mattress May Be Part Of The Cause
A study reported by researchers in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology looked at 3,580 beds and found that an old mattress can be home to 2 ½ times the allergy-triggering dust mites as compared to a new mattress. The researchers offered two simple solutions that reduce the impact of the mites on your allergies: 1. Encase your mattress and box spring in a non-allergenic cover; it can dramatically cut exposure. 2. Wash your bed linens once a week in hot water.
In addition to the above, another measure I've found would be a "mite-resistant" choice of mattress. While no memory foam or latex material is free of mites, it is true, however, that their extremely dense structure makes it more difficult for dust mites to nest and feed. Foam does not promote dust mite growth like regular or wool mattresses because, unlike natural fibres, is not a food source in itself.
Beating Depression Can Take Time And Patience
According to a study of 3,671 persons suffering from depression only 37% reported relief from their depression after the first treatment method was used. It took a total of three more attempts to move that figure up to a 67% success rate for persons feeling as though their depression had lifted. Since most treatments take up to 12 weeks to fully kick in, this means it could take approximately 9 months to find relief.
So…while you’re waiting for drug treatments to kick in, you might want to begin exercising as another approach to lifting the veil of depression.

Use Folic Acid To Reduce The Risk Of Alzheimer’s Disease
Researchers from Columbia University found that folic acid can lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. In this study there were 965 dementia free subjects who were 65 years old and older. The researchers measured folic acid in their diets and supplements and tracked these people for six and a half years. Over that period, 192 developed Alzheimer’s. Those who had the higher intake of folic acid had a lower risk of developing the disease.
You can increase your folate levels by eating folate-rich foods (beans, leafy greens and other vegetables) and take 800 mcg of supplemental folic acid daily.

Spinal Cord Paralysis May Not Be Permanent
There’s a technique reported in Time that may help paralyzed persons regain some of their mobility by using locomotor training therapy. It seems that the spinal cord is hardwired with a backup program for walking. This, in turn, may be able to take over when signals from the brain quit. Currently, there are 17 hospitals and rehab centers using it.
This training requires the therapist to fit the person in a harness and manually “walk” the person’s feet on a treadmill. It seems that the damaged central nervous system cells that survive the trauma can become more efficient at sending signals thus allowing the person to walk again.
