THE IMPORTANCE OF FRIENDS

STUDENT ABLE TO STUDY AGAIN

THE POWER OF NOT BEING A PESSIMIST

October 5, 1998

THE IMPORTANCE OF FRIENDS

The concept of use your brain or lose it got some more validation.  A study was done with aging mice.  One group was put in an environment with lots of playmates and toys.  The aged mice developed three times as many new brain cells as mice that were kept in boring environments.

This means the elderly need to keep active with friends and activities.

In addition, friendships can actually help speed recovery from a stroke.  A study reported in "Stroke", January 1993, had 46 first-time stroke patients that felt they got the most tender loving care from families and friends.

The biggest difference came after six months.  The people who did not feel supported by friends saw their abilities after the stroke improve slightly after the stroke and then dropped dramatically six months later.

The people who felt the most supported scored 65% higher on the tasks of daily living.

Some guidelines to help the person:
  1. Be a good listener to the person.
  2. Don't be overprotective of the person.
  3. After six months, most of the improvement has probably taken place.
  4. Assert the stroke person in repetivity practice as they need to relearn basic tasks.

STUDENT ABLE TO STUDY AGAIN

I had a client purchase the Steven Halpern Accelerated Learning tape for his son.   Here's what he said happened.
I went in my older son's room last night about 10:30 p.m.  It was the eve of his 18th birthday.  He was doing the following...

  1. SITTING AT HIS DESK!  (I swear, I don't know when I last saw him do that. On the RARE occasions when he did study the past couple of years, it was LYING DOWN on his bed.)
  2. STUDYING!  (Yes, Virginia, he was really studying! I saw it with my own eyes!)
  3. AND YES...PLAYING HALPERN'S ACCELERATED LEARNING TAPE! (The volume was pretty loud, but so what!)

So as not to interrupt, I quickly wheeled around and started out of his room.
He saw me and said, "Oh, come on in, Dad.   I decided to just go ahead and do my homework for tomorrow night as well, since my birthday's tomorrow, and we'll be going out to eat."
(Please read that last statement about three times!)

I WISH YOU COULD COMPREHEND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THAT EVENT!

I'm talking about my firstborn son, who went from the Virginia Beach Old Donation Program for the Gifted and Talented to failing 12th grade.  I saw him do NO studying at home last year after October, except for final exams for which he studied less than one hour total.

Well, this is a thank you note to you (and Steven Halpern).

If you run into any non-believers out there, give 'em my number!
                A very grateful father,
                                                     JR

THE POWER OF NOT BEING A PESSIMIST

Does it pay to be positive?  The answer is yes.  Optimists recover from surgery faster.

What if you're not an optimist?  Then fake it.  A study at Ohio State University found that it was more important for a person's health and stress levels to not be a pessimist than to be a real optimist.  If you find yourself seeing the glass as half-empty, ask yourself if that thought
is real.  You might at least move to neutral if not seeing the glass as half-full.
